Law Court Visit

In Year 9 Humanities we have been learning about our legal system and the function of our courts. This week our students were fortunate to visit the Francis Burt Law Centre where they were afforded the opportunity to participate in a range of community legal education activities including a mock trial and a tour of the Supreme Court.  Students also observed a live courtroom in session in the District and Magistrates Courts where they heard of evidence presented, sentencing and pleas from the accused.

The boys are to be commended on their exceptional behaviour and we look forward to the opportunity to apply their observations to our Humanities lessons next week.

Year 7 Welcome Social

Thursday afternoon was the first introduction to the Mercedes ladies in the Class of 2028 for the Year 7 cohort.  The afternoon was a wonderful opportunity for our boys to connect with their peers and the girls of Mercedes College to build positive relationships and create lasting memories.

Throughout the afternoon students engaged in a range of fun and exciting activities, including dancing, tug of war, games, and the great egg and spoon race. We were impressed with how well the boys interacted with one another and the girls, displaying kindness, respect, and empathy towards their peers.

We believe that this social event was a significant step towards building a strong sense of community and belonging amongst our students establishing solid foundations for the 6 year journey alongside Mercedes College. Creating a positive school culture is essential to our students' success, and events like the Year 7 Social are just one way in which we aim to achieve this goal.

By encouraging positive interactions and relationships between our students, we hope to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that empowers our students to reach their full potential.

Year 11 and 12 ATAR PE Studies Excursion to WAIS

Aden Thomson 12.7

On Wednesday, 29 March, the Year 11 and 12 PE Studies ATAR students were lucky enough to visit the West Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) High Performance Service Centre for an educational excursion. The focus of the day was on providing students with a practical understanding of the Exercise Physiology requirements involved with being an elite athlete, with an emphasis on key training, testing, and recovery methods.

We were greeted by Jen, a WAIS rowing athlete who provided a tour of the advanced sporting facilities at WAIS. Students learnt about technology such as altitude dorms used to give athletes an ‘extra 1%’ in their performance as well as giving us the opportunity to participate in wheelchair basketball and coordination tests.

Students participated in VO2 Max tests, with two students from our group completing the test and others collecting data on the student’s maximal oxygen uptake and lactic acid production.

A second test that we participated in was measuring how an athlete’s performance changes in hot and humid environments, with students exercising in an artificial heat room reaching 38 degrees and 80% humidity.

A highlight for many students was the athlete recovery pools. We immersed ourselves in both an icy-cold pool and a hot pool and experienced firsthand the benefits it can have to recovering athletes in stimulating blood flow and reducing lactic acid.

We finished our day at WAIS with a presentation from one of WAIS’s performance dieticians who educated us on athlete nutrition, protein, and carbohydrate requirements as well as the role that supplements play in an elite athlete’s diet.

Overall, the excursion was a valuable experience in providing Year 11 and 12 students with information applicable to their PE studies course as well as giving students a unique and up-close look at what it means to compete at such a high level. A special thanks to Mr Jenkin for providing us with this experience.
