Learning and Teaching Update

'We aim to provide a school environment where ‘Every person can flourish and be known’ This means that our teaching program identifies the unique needs of each individual student, and delivers a learning program designed to grow them into the best person that they can be'.

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you all enjoyed a good rest over the school holidays with your children.

Term 2 is here and I welcome back all students and families.

This is a short term of only nine weeks. It is also the term you will receive your child’s school report that paints a picture of their growth this year. During this term, teachers will be teaching and assessing students in an ongoing basis so they have adequate data to report to the Victorian Curriculum.

At St Anthony’s we have a real focus on growth. This focus on growth involves moving away from the idea that success is defined by comparing a student’s results to standards that apply to all students across the same year. Instead, we look at success in relation to the growth and progress that individuals make, regardless of their starting points. Once teachers establish where students are at in their learning, they can set appropriate goals and plan their teaching so students can work towards their next goal. Teachers then monitor a student’s progress and adjust their teaching and learning strategies to meet the needs of the students over time. This perspective of growth is based on Carol Dweck’s theory of growth mindset (Dweck, 2006).

We have a lot of exciting learning experiences that have been planned for the term. I encourage all parents and carers to read the Term Newsletters that will be sent out by the teachers so you are aware of the learning that will happen this term.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Kind regards
