Camfield Silly Sock Day

On Thursday 27 June, Camfield hosted a Silly Sock Day. Boarding students got into the spirit of the day, donning crazy socks to raise money for the Albany Hospice. Camfield raised a total of $600.00 by the end of the day.  A Staff vs Student soccer match was planned but had to be rescheduled due to poor weather.

Farewell from Paula

Looking back and thinking about the day that I first arrived in Australia, and then at Grammar, it feels like it was ages ago, yet I can’t believe it’s over already. I can’t describe how amazing my experience here has been. Everything that I’ve been able to do has been beyond my expectations. I’ve just loved every single bit that came with the job. I wasn’t expecting it to happen, but I’ve grown close to some of the most amazing kids ever, and  I know that they will always have a special place in my heart. All of this has helped me grow as an individual in so many ways and I’ll be forever grateful for that!

Starting this last term was quite overwhelming and nostalgic and, yet, I wouldn’t change anything about my experience here. Lastly, my time wouldn’t have been anything like this without the other Gap Assistants I was able to meet. I was very lucky to experience two completely different groups. A huge part of my constant smile, laughter, and excitement has all been thanks to those amazing people who marked my journey.

On 13 July 2018, I left Colombia with a heavy heart because I was leaving my family for a year.  Now,  11 July 2019, I’ll be leaving Australia with a broken but completely full heart, thinking about everything I’ll be leaving behind, not knowing when or if I’d be coming back to the people I developed so much love for.

Goodbye GSG

This excellent institution has been my home for the last six months. I have been privileged to be part of the full boarding experience, ranging from getting hit with dodgeballs from young students during gym sessions to judging cooking competitions. It is safe to say this has been the best six months of my life and I am so thankful to everyone who has made it so amazing for me.

The boys in Anchorage House, the Goggins’ and the other Gap Assistants have been my family during my journey in Australia and it brings tears to my eyes to have to say goodbye. Their continuous kindness, laughs and hospitality have really impacted my life positively. I leave Australia so happy to have applied for this wonderful programme and I trust it runs for years and years so that more young adults can have this wonderful experience.

Foundation Day

The school celebrated its 21st birthday on 21 June and, as per tradition, the Foundation Day assembly was followed by the Running of the Flags. Three runners participated from boarding. Jye Trundle took the Year Nine boys' leg for Camfield House, while Dayle Haarmans took the flag for Mokare House in the final lap by Year Twelve boys'. Dayle was closely followed by Taylor Pocock from Camfield House.

Well done to all the runners and to Mokare House for the second year in a row.

2040

In June, 20 students, Mr Goggins and Mrs Ball went to see the new one-time screening movie, 2040. Damon Gameau, who made That Sugar Film also made 2040 as he is worried about his daughter’s generation.  The movie is about the positive things that we are doing for our environment and what the outcomes could be in 2040 if we continue with them. It includes many interesting points about the way that we use our environment. An idea I liked was growing seaweed to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Seaweed grows at half a metre a day and it’s grown on a frame anchored to the seafloor. It can be farmed and is good because it has many different uses. It can replace coal as a fuel, it is edible and it creates homes for sea life.

Another idea happening in India is to allow people to buy small boxes and a battery that connect to solar panels. It allows you to buy energy or sell it to your neighbours if you own the solar panels. The money that is made stays in the community instead of going to big energy business.

Another idea can be used in agriculture.  By growing different types of plants in a paddock (sunflowers, millet and sorghum), the carbon content of the soil is increased. This enriches the soil, while taking carbon from the air. If you have cows, they can eat it, which is good for them as they eat natural plants, not grains. It was a good experience and I look forward to the next movie.
