assistant principal's message

dear families,

On Tuesday night, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the 2019 Grade 6 Graduation. I can honestly say that it was one of the most moving, joyful and inspiring graduations that I’ve attended.

In preparation for the night, all students were required to write a graduation speech. Due to the high quality of the speeches, the teachers decided to ask two students to speak. Below are the two graduate’s speeches that were selected. Please read and enjoy!

I’m sure we all remember when the worst insult was “You’re a bossy boots.” and that would be the end of a friendship that started with walking up to a stranger and saying “can we be friends.’’

The first time we walked to school, all by our proud little selves, when you commented on others Ben Ten lunch boxes with jealousy. And surely the year sixes remember the Miny man. But now the years have gone, we are standing on the brink of high school. We have developed social skills, bonds with our friends. In just seven years we have learned to read and write the crazy English language, to calculate and now to have a personality, be ourselves and work out what that is.

My primary school years have not always been a smooth path but teachers have always offered support and my understanding friends have always been there for me when I needed them, thanks to these people I am who I am today.

Primary school has given us strong foundations to build a future. We are all grateful for those moments we understood something that was once a jumble of ideas, we’re grateful for the teachers that knew they have the most important job on that planet, the teachers that taught us how to think, not what to think.

We would also like to thank the community at BNWPS. The sense of belonging and community at this school is immense, I wish every school could welcome and be brought together like ours. With our exquisite markets, assemblies, working bees and the school song we’ll miss singing.

High school won’t give us Sprout icy poles and Trevor cookies along the way, it will be a very different adventure to embark on. But thanks to this fulfilling school with a rich culture, it’s a challenge that we are all well prepared for.

Good evening families, friends, teachers, staff and of course, graduates of 2019.

Brunswick North West Primary School is a primary school to welcome kids from foundation to year 6 and it provides us with many things such as education, food at the canteen, a sick bay if you get hurt and lastly prepare us for high school. And they’ve all done a great job at it.

Can you believe it! Just look at you! You are probably wearing dresses and cool outfits busy posting photos on instagram captioning “Graduation!” with your friends because that’s what I did.

Before I started, I thank my friends who supported me and teachers who taught well, give them around of applause please because we know they aren’t doing it for the money and teaches us important things to be learned and shared in the future.

What I’m going to say might be relatable to some of you in some way. Going to this school was a big change for me. Like I have to learn how to walk again, I only have a couple of real friends at my old school so it was scary for a new school for me. This school treated me so well and I'm very grateful for it, I made some new friends, learned some new things in class and enjoying my life every day at this primary school and I’m thankful for it.  And that’s how my primary school journey has gone and I can’t wait for a new start next year. If you feel like failing and giving up, just think about what kind of person you will be in the future.

Thank you for listening to my speech therefore goodbye and have a great night.

Now you can understand why the evening was so moving, joyful and inspiring! Lucy managed to provide an insight into some of school’s challenges, including navigating friendships, learning the crazy English language while navigating the jumble of ideas. Lucy’s speech celebrates being able to work out who she is, while learning how to think, not what to think. What an exciting future lies ahead for such a reflective and articulate young person. You go girl!

While listening to Riri’s speech, I needed to remind myself that she has only been in Australia for two years. Her accomplishment of being able to engage and entertain an audience, using humour and pace, was very impressive, as are her words! I am personally very proud to be part of such an inclusive and kind community which enable Riri to thrive, supporting her learning, making friends and having confidence both in herself and her future. Our future is in great hands with people like Lucy and Riri leading the way.

Good luck and best wishes to the 2019 Graduating Class. I hope that you all fulfil your potential and have a ball while doing so.

Take care,

Wendy White
