China Trip 2019 Report Continued

S. Johnson

During the first week of the school holidays the six students departed Dali bound for Xi’an, population 12.9 million people.  First stop was the Terracotta Warriors, discovered in 1974 by local farmers buried five meters below the ground surface .  This army of statues consists of an estimated 8000 soldiers, 520 horses, and 130 chariots all life sized.  The detail of the statues and the size of the pits that they are buried in is truly amazing.  They continue digging up and recreating the broken soldier statues to this day.  Boarding the train at Xi’an, we then traveled approximately 300kph to Beijing.  Beijing was a little larger than Xi’an with a population of  21.5 million people, no wonder it felt busy in the city.  During our time in Beijing we headed out of the city to the Great Wall to walk, which was more like a climb up to the Fortresses.  In the 30 degree heat it was quite a challenge but we each made a number of stages.  Thank you to the parents and students that made this trip possible.  The China Exchange is a great program that has celebrated ten years visiting China and Dali Number 1 High School.
