Yr 8 Boys Cricket

On the 16th of March the Year 7 & 8 boys cricket team took on Catholic College Sale at the College oval in Sale in a T20 match. Hamish (Captain) won the toss and decided to bat first. The boys made over 50 runs with Jack Dowsett, Conner Gell and Ethan Rogers making plenty of runs. Unfortunately Catholic College were too strong when it was their turn to bat and ended up winning by just over 80 runs. All the boys had a go and all had a go at batting and bowling. Jack Dowsett was our man of the match making over 20 runs and looked threatening at times when bowling. A thank you to Tarant Rose and Austin Anlezark for helping umpire on the day and to Ed Phelan-Penson for coaching the boys as well as umpiring.

Wellington Swimming Carnival

On Thursday March 5th, 24 Maffra Secondary College students travelled to the Sale outdoor pool to compete in the Wellington Inter School Carnival. It was fantastic to see the majority of students who had progressed from our house sports, take up the challenge to compete in the next round of competition. All the students swam to the best of their ability, so well in fact that Maffra Secondary College was placed third in the overall scores behind both Lavalla and Catholic College however well ahead of all the other government schools in the Wellington District. This was a fantastic effort. Well done and congratulations to all the students.

The following students progressed to the Gippsland Inter-school Swimming Carnival –

Henry Noble– 50m breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, backstroke and 100m freestyle

Bevan O’Doherty – 50m breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke

Sophie Allen-  50m breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 100m freestyle

Jye Missen– 50m breaststroke

Relays

13  yr old boys freestyle – Henry Noble, Jamieson Barton, Jack Dowsett, Mitch Coridas

13 yr old girls freestyle   - Kate Allen, Emily Johnston, Chelsea Adams, Frances Ellis

15 – 16 yr old boys medley – Jack Dennis, Shaq Coridas, Ben Missen, Billy Bowker

15 yr old boys freestyle– Shaq Coridas, Jack Dennis, Colby Dennis, Matt Rondon.

Thank you to all the parents who attended on the day – Ness Noble, Jo O’Doherty, Danielle Coridas and Natasha Johnston (my apologies if other parents popped in and I didn’t see you) and thanks to Ness for timekeeping, Danielle for managing the team (while Kirsty Missen and I officiated) and Jo our photographer.

Gippsland Inter-school Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 12th March, 10 students travelled to Warragul to participate in the Gippsland Interschool swimming Carnival. The competition was much more intense that the Wellington Round however all students swam to the best of their ability and were a credit to Maffra Secondary College.

Our most successful swimmers on the day were Henry Noble was paced 4th in the 50m freestyle and 6th in both the 50m butterfly and Sophie Allen who placed 4th in the 16 – 20 100m freestyle and 5th in the 50m breaststroke. Our relays also performed well.

Once again thanks to Ness Noble who officiated for Maffra Secondary College on the day and Natasha Johnston who supported the team.

Interschool Gymkhana

The interschool gymkhana was held in late February at the Maffra Showgrounds. This year Maffra Secondary College had 8 students who participated in showjumping, games and rider classes. The students seemed to really enjoy their day and gave each event their best efforts, even when the wind got so strong that it knocked all of the jumps over. On the day, Alyssa Greening was our most successful student getting Reserve Champion for the Yr 8 age group, great job Alyssa! Thanks to all of the parents who helped on the day and well done to all of the riders and horses who braved the elements and made the day so enjoyable for all.

Beach Volleyball

Twenty-five Maffra Secondary College students ventured to St Kilda Beach to participate in the Schools Cup Beach Volleyball Competition held in March. Unfortunately the weather did not bring the beach conditions with rain and wind all day. This was a new experience for our Yr 7 boys’ team who ended up having a very successful day coming 3rd overall. Along with the Yr 7 team, there were four Yr 9 and 10 teams and one Yr 11 girls team who also demonstrated great teamwork and volleyball skills. A big thank you to our coaches Bridie Williamson and Mikayla Underwood for coaching on the day. All teams participated extremely well, demonstrating their resilience and persistence in what were trying conditions and competitive opponents.

Well done MSC!
