Careers 2020

The role of a school careers service is to provide up-to-date information, counselling and advice on careers and transitions from school, as well as to ensure students are advised of any opportunities that might further their knowledge of post-school employment and training options. Careers will also manage the school work experience program and work with students completing school-based training in the workforce. Students or parents who would like to discuss any Careers-related matter with Marie Clark can email or phone to make an appointment, or please drop by the Careers office to make a time. I look forward to working with you in 2020 to get the best outcomes for all our young people.

The year 12 class of 2020 will very soon complete their 2020 Career Plan, indicating possible areas of further study or employment they are interested in. These students not only have a busy year of study, but they also need to make some big decisions this year about their future direction. I strongly encourage students and parents to be very proactive this year in seeking out information and preparing for transition for 2021. Going to university open days is important – put the dates in your diaries.

Year 12 Class of 2019

Our Class of 2019 are stepping into the next phase of their life, many of them in the process of beginning a new course at University or TAFE, or on the job learning. A number of students have secured apprenticeships in trades over the summer and we were extremely happy that every VCE student who applied received a tertiary offer to University or TAFE. We have students studying an array of courses, including criminology, education, science, law, arts, social work, sports science, fashion design and IT; we look forward to keeping in touch with them and hearing about their challenges and successes.

Morrisby Year 9 Program:  All Year 9 students in Victorian Government Schools are now offered the opportunity to participate in the My Career Insights Program – which involves students undertaking the Morrisby Online career diagnostic assessment. The test takes under two hours, and was conducted this week at Maffra Secondary College. Following the online assessment, both students and parents are encouraged to consider the information and answer some questions in preparation for a 1:1 career counselling session, which will be conducted by a qualified, external career practitioner, during school hours and on school premises. The discussions will include exploring student results in the context of training, higher education and employment pathways and options. Written interview notes summarizing the session and any action points will be provided to the school careers service. The outcome of the process will be to improve the quality and understanding of pathways for Year 9 students. If you have any questions regarding the assessment please contact Marie Clark marie.clark@education.vic.gov.au

A Career in Policing: Quick Facts about Applying

Students are eligible to apply at 18 – There is a misconception that young adults do not have enough life and work experience for the role. To the contrary, a large number of members of the Police Force joined at the age of 18. Students must have completed either VCAL or VCE. Police recruitment staff and psychologists will assess applicants to determine their suitability for the policing environment at each of the 11 stages of the recruitment process.

Prior Work Experience - there is no prior work experience that is considered more highly than others – for example, someone who has been working at McDonalds is certainly eligible to apply. The important factors are exposure to conflict resolution, ability to adapt to the workplace, teamwork, leadership and developed emotional intelligence. However, if a student is only working 5 hours a week over an extended period of time, they may not be consistently developing the skills required for the Police role.

Life experience will be different for each applicant – Again, police recruitment staff and psychologists will assess this factor on a case-by-case basis. There are times where a young applicant ticks the boxes but fails to demonstrate the required maturity and communication skills necessary to perform the duties of a Police Officer or Protective Services Officer (PSO) at the panel interview stage.

While taking a gap year to find employment or travel is an option, it is important that during those 12 months those young applicants are actively looking to further develop themselves in other areas. Volunteering, involvement in a community group or sporting club is also highly regarded. Again, it is important to note that in order to be
