Last Saturday 50 Ex students Cantabrians spanning leaving years of 1943-1990 came together for a High Tea in Cantabrian Hall. They had the opportunity to reminisce about the school days.
Also last week I met Maria Di Mauro and her younger brother Adrian. They have a close relative in the current Yr 12 and were visiting to see the Art Show. There is a wooden seat that sits in the building join between A Block and C block and Maria and Adrian sat on that seat for 4 years every morning between 1992 and 1995. Adrian was looked after by his elder sister Maria every morning before her went to primary school at Canterbury Public during those years. They took another photo 25 years on and had a lovely time remembering school days. A brass plaque sits proudly on that seat in memory of those days.
Many students have enjoyed the school bird cage that sits in the inner quads over the decades. We recently finally upgraded the cage to a brand new one. The bird cage was originally put there in 1971, in memory of Sharon McCall, who when in first form was tragically killed at Canterbury station. We hope the bird cage goes on for many years in memory of Sharon.
Lastly our olive tree looks like it might finally fruit this year. The olive tree was planted in memory of ex student Assia Cheik-Hussein who tragically lost her life in 2012.
On Thursday the 12th of September, a Year 11 VET Business Services student, Maria Zacharakis and VET Teacher Ms. Szymanski attended the 2019 Southern Sydney Business Education Network (SSBEN) Awards Ceremony at New South Wales Parliament House.
SSBEN coordinate work placement opportunities for students. They provide centralized coordination between all stakeholders to ensure a seamless process and single point of contact for schools and host employers to support a safe placement. Canterbury Girls High School offers vocational education subjects to allow students to work alongside a host employer, gaining exposure in real work environments. This gives them the opportunity to practice skills they have learned in the classroom. These subjects are accredited by NESA and count as units of study towards the HSC. These VET courses produce nationally recognized qualifications.
Maria was nominated for her outstanding professionalism during her work placements for Business Services. Maria began Business Services in Year 10, completing the accelerated course for those students who wish to peruse the qualifications before their Higher School Certificate. She received an award amongst only a select few students across the wider SSBEN community, in the presence of several local and state members of parliament. The ceremony was held at the Strangers Dining Room over breakfast, overlooking The Domain in the heart of Sydney CBD. A big congratulations, Maria!
Congratulations to the following students who were recognised at the recent Sydney South Regional VET Awards for Excellence:
Milena Pavlovic, Gabrielle Waterson, Emma Jonas Moralee, Olive O'Grady, Evie Juchau, Stefanie Kostaglou, from Year 9, participated in the Sydney Tower Stair Climb last Sunday for a charity called Giant Steps.
They all did really well and we're so proud of these girls giving up their time to do the challenge of 1504 steps and raising some money for this wonderful charity.
A great opportunity for Year 10 students to take part in consultation about My Health Record with the National Children’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell
Anouk Povaly, Year 10, Mieke van Wel, Year 10 and Maria Zaccheo, Year 10 have been selected to participate in the Canterbury Bankstown Talent Advancement Program 2019 Showcase.
Marie Ikonomou, Year 12, has been selected as a Featured Dancer for the Schools Spectacular Musical Theatre.
Juanita Takapo and Amaani Fieldes-Busingye who were both successful in auditions for JMC Academy 2020 intake.
