Second Round DAV Competition

On the 18th June the Girton Grammar School Debating Teams competed in the second rounds of the Debater’s Association of Victoria Schools’ Competition. The students conducted themselves impeccably and won some hard-fought debates against some tough opponents.

 

In D Grade, the D1 team consisting of Sharoon Mirza (8Je), Aksharan Shobanan (8R), and Remus Brasier (8M) competed in one debate, That convicted criminals should not be allowed to publish accounts of their crimes, winning by 4 points. Congratulations to Remus for winning best speaker for the debate.

 

 

The D2 team, consisting of Freya Nairn (8Jo), Sophie Mayes (8Jo), Zoe Cuthberston (8Jo) and Poppy Cornelius (8A) competed in two debates, the topic above, winning by 4 points, and the topic That all political parties should have quotas for female candidates, which they lost by only 1 point. Congratulations Zoe and Poppy who debated in their very first debates, and to Sophie who won best speaker in the second debate.

 

 

Our D3 team consisting of Oshadha Kodippiliarachchi (7Jo), Jenna Ackland (7Jo) and Bailey Dolan (7A) competed in the two debates above, winning the first debate by 1 point and losing the second debate. Congratulations to Jenna who won best speaker for the first debate.

 

Special thanks go to Mrs Barton, Arunika Madina (11Je), Zoe Hilson (11F), Sophie Thompson (11F) and Simone Stephens (11F) for helping the juniors prepare their debates.

 

In C Grade, the C1 team consisting of Aubrey Jacobs (10Jo), Lasith Kulasekera (10Jo) and Janidu Hathurusinghe (10Je) competed in two debates, That we should abolish political parties winning by 1 point, and the secret topic, That there should be a minimum age for mobile phone usage, wining by 2 points. Congratulations Aubrey who won best speaker in the second debate.

 

 

The C2 consisting of Sam Wardrop (9A), Nathan Jones (10Jo) and Woaliba Hadi (10F) debated the two topics above, losing the first topic and winning the second by 1 point. Very special thanks go to Woaliba who filled in at the last minute!  

 

 

 

In the VCE Grade, our Year 11 team 1 consisting of Dominic Tune (11Je), James Brown (11F), Noah Ashby (11F) and Dinith Tennakoon (11Je) competed in one debate, That we should criminally prosecute companies that use sweatshops, winning by 3 points. Congratulations Dominic who won best speaker.

 

 

Our VCE Grade Year 11 team 2 consisting of Arunika Madina (11Je), Zoe Hilson (11F), Sophie Thompson (11F) and Simone Stephens (11F) competed in the secret topic, That the human race should strive for immortality, losing narrowly by 1 point. Congratulations to Arunika who won equal best speaker!

 

 

Our VCE Grade Year 11 team 3 consisting of Soumik Das (11F), Jake Arulsuthan (11F), Danai Mahachi (11F) and Flynn Edwards (11M) competed in the secret topic above losing by only 2 points.

 

 

 

Our VCE Grade Year 12 team 1 consisting of Abbey Saxon (12F), Charlie Wardrop (12A) and Jordan Rogers (12M) competed in the first topic above losing narrowly by 2 points.

 

 

Our VCE Grade Year 12 team 2 consisting of Conrad Livingstone (12F), Thomas Millar (12Jo) and Tafara Mhindurwa (12F) competed in both debates above, winning the first by 2 points and the second by 1 point. Congratulations to Thomas who won best speaker in the first debate!
