Junior School News

From the Head of Junior School

At our first Junior School Assembly of the term I spoke to our students about personal safety and how to recognise and respond when they are feeling unsafe. Such conversations are often hard for parents and teachers to have with our younger students for fear of a “loss of innocence”. Unfortunately, in today’s society, these conversations are necessary in order to protect our children. For schools they are also a mandatory element of Child Safety policies and processes.

Today’s discussion was focussed on recognising when our body is telling us that something is not right, that it is making us feel uncomfortable or scared, reacting to those feelings in ways to prioritise our safety and then reporting the situation or circumstances to trusted adults. Girton Grammar School has a strong commitment to ensuring that all of our children are protected from harm and empowered to speak up if they feel that something is not right or if they feel unsafe. Information regarding our commitment to Child Safety can be found at https://www.girton.vic.edu.au/images/Child-Protection-Safety-Policy.pdf

It is recommended that parents follow up today’s assembly discussion at home, in particular, the focus on Recognising, Reacting and Reporting. More resources for parents can be found at https://danielmorcombefoundation.com.au/keeping-kids-safe-resources/parents_carers/

Year One Sleepover

Year One had their annual Sleepover at the Discovery Centre just before the long weekend in June.  The children had a wonderful afternoon, experiencing the Talking Tram and afternoon tea at the Beechworth Bakery before heading to the Discovery Centre.  All the students had a chance to enjoy the activities at the Discovery Centre from the planetarium to the vertical slide. The Sleepover provides our younger students with the experience of the camp environment.

Netball

The Sandhurst Netball Tournament took place on the first day of Term Three.  The Girton Junior School had 16  Year Five and Six students competing in the girls and boys sections.  Under very trying conditions, the girls played well on the outside courts managing to win one match for the day.  The boys played on the inside courts, having a great time competing against some strong opposition. Unfortunately, neither the girls or the boys progressed to the grand final but all came away with further skills and having had a great experience.
