Community Report

June Update

The Achilles Community have had a very successful semester, with stellar achievements across all areas!

Students excelled in their Performing Arts presentations, proving that hard work and focus during rehearsals pays off! The Argus Community (Preps) and teachers came along to watch their fantastic performance. The performance was funny and entertaining, and a delight to see. It does help support the performers to have such a wonderful audience - so thank you very much from the Achilles to the Argus Community for coming along to see it!

In Reading, we have continued to work on inferencing and we have also been making predictions and connections, connecting texts to our own lives and other texts.

In Writing, we are working hard on our narratives, with a focus on following the writing process to draft, edit, revise and publish our writing.

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes in Maths: naming each shape and identifying their features, such as, how many corners and sides.

Our Inquiry lessons have been bursting at the seams with enthusiasm, curiousity, creativity and innovation!

Students completed their Marble Runs and were very excited for our

Marble Runs Showcase, on Wednesday the 26th of June, where families were invited to come along and see the Achilles Community's amazing creations.

Ask your child about 'The Cup Challenge'... students had so much fun working in groups to demonstrate their communication skills - collaborating and showing teamwork to achieve a very tricky challenge!

A big congratulations and thank you to all students, staff and families who participated in our first Athletics Carnival! It was an enjoyable and exciting day, with lots of team spirit!

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

- We encourage students to read for at least 15 minutes each night, and to choose from a range of different texts, such as, the many genres of fiction (realistic, fantasy, Sci-Fi, mystery, comics, etc.) non-fiction, books, websites, and other media.

- Your local library is a great place to visit on the weekend or during the term holidays! Ask the library staff for a schedule, or see the link below, as all libraries run free workshops for children and adults, and provide valuable resources to support your child's learning. Visit the Craigieburn Library at 75-95 Central Park Avenue

- We provide students with a new dictation every Monday, pasted in their school diaries. These dictations include their spelling focus of the week, and also encourage punctuation skills, grammar and sentence structure.*However, there will not be a new dictation given out on Monday the 24th of June, for the last week of school.

- We also encourage all students to bring an iPad to school next term. *This is important, as a tool to support their learning. We will be issuing a list of suggested Apps for your iPad. To connect to our internet, it is just a few easy steps. Please come to see us for assistance.

- Don't forget to stop in for a coffee and a chat on Thursday the 18th of July, where our principal Pete Hansen will be available to meet and chat with parents from 9am to 10am.

- The students have had so much fun building marble runs and other interesting Inquiry projects this term. We would like to continue giving students opportunities to use their creative thinking for innovation and design, so please continue to collect empty packaging, such as, cereal boxes, plastic bottles, paper towel rolls, etc. to support the students in their maker's projects!

*Technology is a useful tool for learning, and networking - but we have also been having many discussions surrounding limiting screen time, and using electronic devices in moderation - which is important for children and adults alike. If you are interested, please check out the following link to take note of some helpful tips - we will, too!

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any queries. We recommend making a note in your child’s diary for us to read or using Sentral’s Parent Portal.

Have wonderful and safe term holidays! We look forward to seeing you all again next semester!

Kind Regards,

Ainsley, Amber, Michelle and Jagruti.
