Student Leadership

Congratulations to our 2022 Student Leaders.

Towards the end of last term  we held our Student Leadership Assembly, where all student leaders were presented with their badge.  It was lovely to have the opportunity and facilities for our parents to finally attend the assembly.

We thank our wonderful parent leaders - Anthony Campbell, Cherie Paterson and Bree Stevens for joining us at the assembly.

These positions provide opportunities for the students to contribute to the life of and decisions at the school, we thank them all for their service.  We also thank all the students who nominated for the positions and showing their commitment to our school community.

NAPLAN Tests

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum. Teachers have been working with student to ensure they are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance during the tests.

Please help your child prepare for NAPLAN by reassuring them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and reminding them on the day to simply try their best.

As is the case on any school day it is great if you can ensure your child has plenty of sleep, a healthy breakfast and a calm morning routine.

Malvern Primary School students are completing their tests online for the first time this year (except Year 3 Writing, which will be paper based).

Test Schedule:

Tuesday 10th  May - Writing (before recess)

Wednesday 11th May - Reading (before recess)

Thursday 12th May - Language Conventions (Year 3 before recess and Year 5 after recess) and Year 5 Numeracy (before recess)

Friday 13th May - Year 3 Numeracy (before recess).

Parents are asked to ensure their child is at school on time for their NAPLAN tests on these days to reduce the stress on their child and the disruption to the rest of the students sitting the test.

Parents will be sent their child’s individual results in August this year.

For more information about the tests, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au.

How is the NAPLAN Data Used?

Although NAPLAN is a test completed only by students in Years 3 and 5, it provides us insight in to the programs across the school and is therefore relevant and important to the whole school.

As a staff we use the NAPLAN results to identify the strengths of our curriculum programs and also to identify areas for future development. Staff look closely at the data - question by question, growth data and data that can identify the difference in the performance of different cohorts of students (eg boys compared to girls). Our Level Teams and Professional Learning Teams then use what we have learnt to refine and improve the curriculum provided to our students.

National Road Safety Week

National Road Safety Week is from the 15th to the 22nd May.  This week focusses on remembering the lives lost on our roads and preventing loss of life.

This week is also a timely reminder to us all of the importance of following road rules and teaching our children the behaviours that make them safer as they use the local streets to get to school and home again. Whether we like it or not our children are great mimickers of our behaviour and this includes the way we use the road.

We have regular lessons with our students on a range of road safety messages, it is also helpful if these are reinforced at home.

The lessons include, using crossings, holding an adult's hand when crossing the road, wearing bike helmets, not darting out from between parked cars, which side of the road to exit a car, how to look to ensure it is safe to cross a road, wearing seat belts, etc
