What exciting things have been happening in Fairview and Cumberland?

Welcome back to Term 2! It has started with some very exciting events.

Cumberland Athletics Carnival

Cumberland students enjoyed a fantastic day at the Athletics Carnival! Everyone got into the House spirit and encouraged their teammates. Excitement was in the air as Millar, Clarke, Cameron and Brodie students competed in a variety of track and field events. The students demonstrated determination, resilience and a positive sporting attitude. It was such a joy to see many parents attend to support the event. The Year 6 House Captains performed their duties diligently and helped the day run smoothly. A very big thank you to the House Captains, students, the teachers, support staff, parents, the PE department, and Mrs Dowling for organising the event. Congratulations to Cameron House for winning the House competition and well done to all competitors for contributing to the success of the carnival!

Aaryan K - 6T

Last Thursday, 28 April we had the annual athletics carnival. Lots of children participated in events such as field events like discus, shotput and javelin, and track events such as the 100, 200, and 800 metres. Many people earned a ribbon, acknowledging their efforts in their respective sport. Everyone enjoyed the day and we look forward to the next carnival.

Aanya K - 6T

Athletics was super fun, and it was great seeing so many of my classmates participating in many activities. The canteen served great food, and I spent the whole day doing stuff I loved. Overall athletics was fun and I enjoyed it very much!

Year 4 Camp at ‘Camp Weekaway’

The Year 4 Camp was such a great experience! For most students it was their first time away from home. The students and teachers braced the cold weather and enjoyed being in the outdoors. Many new experiences were embraced, such as the flying fox, canoeing and laser tag! Outdoor Education Camps provide a range of new experiences that promote the development of a variety of skills, values and attitudes, such as:

  • Independence, self-reliance and responsibility
  • Interdependence, teamwork and collaboration
  • Determination, persistence and willingness to try new things
  • Respect and consideration of others
  • An appreciation, promotion and protection of the natural environment
  • Hiking, climbing, balancing, planning and organising.

Well done to the students for demonstrating exemplary behaviour and manners at Camp Weekaway! A huge thank you to the teachers for their organisation, care and energy, and for going above and beyond to ensure that the students had a great camping experience. Thank you to Mrs Anne Adams for overseeing the organisation of the camp and to Mrs Gemma Jones, Mr Scott Munro, Mrs Jane Steenkamp, Mr James Miller, Miss Maria Koullas and Mr Nigel Keegan.

Internet Safe Education

Guest speaker Brett Lee

‘Internet Safe Education programs will equip primary aged students with the skills and knowledge necessary to enable them to use the internet safely, creating awareness of rights and responsibilities in a digital world. This is achieved through dynamic and engaging presentations targeting empowerment, awareness and self-esteem.

Internet safety and cyberbullying education is no longer optional; it’s essential. As our primary school aged children are becoming a part of this environment earlier and earlier we have a valuable opportunity to begin the education process NOW whereby REAL change can be made.’

Cumberland students were fortunate to have a guest speaker,

Brett Lee, talk to them in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre about internet safety. Five important messages to help students make clever digital choices are:

  1. The internet is public and permanent.
  2. I protect my personal details online.
  3. People I only know on the internet are strangers.
  4. We all have rules on the internet.
  5. I talk to a trusted adult if I have an online problem.

Further information about internet safety can be found here:

Prep News

Mrs Natasha Radley (Prep AHOS)

I would like to warmly welcome you to Term 2. The students have settled back so well it is wonderful to see their smiles. Their teachers are so proud!

This week in Prep we had a 'Pyjama Day', to work in with our word of the week, 'bed'. The Prep children were very excited to come to school in their pyjamas (as were the teachers)! It was hard not to fall asleep throughout the day when they were feeling so cozy and comfy. The Prep students worked through the letter reversals of b and d which are in the word bed and are more confident at remembering to write them and pronounce them the correct way.

We have also had something very exciting come to the Prep rooms. We have 10 chicken eggs in an incubator, which we will be watching closely to see when they will start to crack and open. The Prep children will be monitoring the eggs and will learn about the life cycle of chickens and eggs as part of the Integrated Studies topic this term.

Year 1 and 2 News

Mr Jevon Scandrett (Year 1/2 AHOS)

Welcome back to Term 2!

Year 1 and Year 2 students and teachers are very excited for a wonderful new term of learning. One of the most exciting aspects of this term is the fact that parents and families are once again able to come to join us for assemblies live in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre! Each Year 1 and Year 2 class will have the opportunity to present at assembly this term. The assembly presentations are a wonderful opportunity for students to experience speaking and/or performing in front of a live audience.

Please view the assembly schedule below to see when your child’s class will be presenting, should you wish to come along.

Year 3 and 4 News

Mrs Anne Adams (Year 3/4 AHOS)

The Year 4 Camp was fantastic and we are grateful that the weather was good and the sun shone, even though the mornings were quite chilly! Parents should be very proud of their children for showing independence and resilience. It was great to see students try new experiences and go out of their comfort zone. Teachers and students alike will sleep well on the weekend! A huge thank you to all the teachers for their hard work, organisation and constant supervision. Also, a huge thank you to the students for their enthusiasm, energy and good behaviour!

Year 3 students got to enjoy their very first Cumberland Athletics Carnival. There were many smiles and cheers as all students tried their hardest in a variety of track and field events.

Year 5 and 6 News

Mr Nigel Keegan (Year 5/6 AHOS)

Year 5 and Year 6 students and teachers have hit the ground running this term! The Peer Support program has commenced, practical experiments in Integrated Studies, an informative and important Cyber Safety presentation, and Winter Interschool Sport trials are just some of the many learning experiences already this term.

During the coming weeks, students will be involved in the Winter Interschool Sport program, which is set to commence against Gladstone Views Primary School. Our Aitken sport program will continue to run for those students who are not competing in Winter teams. Year 5 students study Space and the Solar System, Year 6 study Pathway to Federation, and both year levels are learning all about narrative writing in English, and Fractions and Data in Maths.

Students will be engaged in a range of other interesting and exciting activities across the various subjects including musical sounds and rhythm, elements of dance, AFL or Netball skills, and robotics in STEM. Well done to all students for their excellent start to Term 2. We look forward to an exciting term ahead and witnessing students’ continued progress.

Mother’s Day Stall

A very big thank you to the Parents and Friends Association for all the work and effort into making the Mother’s Day Stall a huge success! The Primary students loved the opportunity to choose a special gift for their mum or special person in their lives.

Happy Mother’s Day to all!

Peer Support Leaders

Last term, Year 6 students were given the opportunity to apply to become one of our 28 Peer Support Student Leaders. The successful applicants attended a Leadership Day at the end of last term. They learnt about the need for Leaders to have empathy and compassion, be conscious of different types of communication, the impact of non-verbal communication, and assertiveness. This week our Peer Support Leaders put their learning into practice as they started to work with groups of Preps during their Life Skills lessons. The Peer Support Leaders will be running a series of lessons about ‘Making and Keeping Friends’ every week for the term. It was hard to tell who was more excited about today’s lesson, the Year 6 students or the Preps!

Cumberland Athletics Carnival

We all enjoyed a wonderful, sunny day together at Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium on Thursday 28 April. All students demonstrated their sportsmanship, athleticism and field skills! A special thank you to the Cumberland Homeroom teachers, Physical Education department and the Year 11 VSR class for helping support such a well co-ordinated event. Well done to the 2022 track and field champions.
