Teachers in Focus

Billy McGrath

My Name is Billy McGrath and I started at Killester in January this year.

I am a Health and PE teacher and also teach in the Year 9 WONDER program.

Originally from the UK, I only moved over to Australia back in January. Prior to this, I was working as a PE teacher in an all-through school (students aged 4-16) in a town called Darlington in the UK.

I completed my undergraduate degree in primary education and spent a few years afterward coaching sports in Europe. I then completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education to become a PE teacher and have been teaching ever since.

This year will be my fourth year teaching. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Killester and found the school to be an amazing place with lovely, hard-working students and teachers.

I am so thrilled to be a part of the Killester community this year. I have taken on the role of Year 10 Level Leader (YLL) and it has been wonderful working with the Year 10s on all aspects of their schooling. Previously I was at a government co-ed school which was very different, but the Killester community has welcomed me with open arms.

When I'm not being a YLL, I absolutely love teaching maths and psychology. Taking on General Maths and VM Numeracy this year has been exciting, hopefully, I can dabble in some psychology soon. I'm really looking forward to the many years here at Killester, supporting every student to be the most wonderful human they can be!

I am in my second year of teaching at Killester and I couldn’t have imagined a better school to start my teaching profession at. Being a fresh graduate teacher in 2022 I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Everyone would say to me, ‘Abdul you have no idea how lucky you are to be here’. At first, I was quite confused but with each class that went by I began to realise just how lucky I actually am.

The subjects that I primarily teach are VCE business and accounting, and my aim is to make these two content-heavy subjects as enjoyable as possible. In addition, this year I am teaching Health and Physical Education which has been very enjoyable.  With how friendly the staff and how respectful the students are, I can see Killester being my first school and the school I finish my teaching career in.

In my spare time, I love to travel and spend as much time outdoors as possible and I must say I do love an adrenaline rush. Since becoming a teacher I’ve had the opportunity to visit a few cities such as, Istanbul, Dubai, Tokyo, and New York. I look forward to the many adventures that await in the near future.

I have worked in Catholic education for over thirty years and have always been drawn to the Brigidine Charism of hospitality, justice, and hope.

Having been at Presentation College Windsor as Faith and Mission Leader before coming to Killester, I felt right at home amongst the stories of St. Brigid and Nano Nagle.

I'm working with the Mission Team at Killester College and I also teach Texts and Traditions and Philosophy. These two subjects complement each other because they reflect the wisdom of the mind and the wisdom of the heart. These two aspects call us to be people of justice and peace. This is what drives me as an educator within the Catholic tradition to empower young people to be positive agents of change in our world today.
