In Reading, students have been completing a detailed 'Book Review' of a focus text which was chosen for them. Over the past 5 weeks, students completed short tasks related to the story they've been reading and are now compiling their information into their report.
This report acts as a bit of an assessment piece, showing their understanding of the text and their ability to use comprehension and analysis strategies such as inferring, questioning, text connections, author's purpose and literal/inferred meaning to deepen their knowledge of the story.
After camp, students will repeat a similar process, but this time with a book of their own choosing. This was also a careful process, as selecting appropriate texts is also an important skill.
In Writing, students have continued developing their narratives, exploring ways to add detail and develop ideas further to enhance their stories. We challenged them to look beyond just the problem, climax and resolution and consider what else could occur throughout the story that could be as entertaining as it is important for the reader.
In Maths, we have wrapped up our unit on Length and turned our focus to Data. We have explored some simple graphs and either responded to questions or asked questions of our own to determine information that is presented.
In Economics, we have now started to wrap up our spending projects and review the choices that have been made when 'Planning a Holiday'. Students are reflecting on how they've spent their money, whether they've followed their budget and how well they've considered needs and wants.
In Science, we completed our short unit on Biological Sciences. We will continue to monitor the plants that are growing using sports drinks, soft drinks, water and food dye and whether being in direct sunlight, shade or in the cupboard are having an impact on their ability to grow.
After camp, we will complete work on Physical Science, exploring light and its various properties.
On Friday, our Victorian State Schools Spectacular students attended their second Mass Dance rehearsal at Officer Secondary College!
Our group has worked extremely hard to be prepared for these rehearsals and it paid off, being recognised for how well we knew the dances!
As part of Reconciliation week, our School Captains Mackenzie and Issy, with Koori student Noah and accompanied by Mrs Dyt, attended two separate community events at the Cardinia Shire Civic Centre.
On Monday, they represented OPS at a very special Flag Raising Ceremony and Smoking Ceremony at the Cardinia Shire Civic Centre, whilst on Friday, they attended an Indigenous and Youth Leader's Day where they met with the Mayor Tammy Radford and learnt all about her role and how the Council provides services and programs for the community. They also met with a youth worker called Nathan who works with the Gathering Place who was very enthusiastic about helping Indigenous and Non Indigenous people become engaged in Aboriginal culture.
On Wednesday 31st May, Indiana was our sole representative at the Division Cross Country! She ran extremely well and finished within the Top 20 runners! An absolutely massive effort and something worth celebrating! Well Done Indy!
