Week 8, Term 2

Welcome back to a short week, I hope you all had a wonderful extra long weekend. This week, we'll once again be reading great stories but also spending some time completing activities we’ve run out of time for over the last few weeks.

This Week’s Reads

Kindergarten - will be learning more about one of the most interesting animals in the world, the sloth, by reading ‘The Sloth Who Came to Stay’ by Margaret Wild. Apart from wondering what it would be like to live with a sloth, students will be enjoying a short National Geographic video about this curious creature too.

Stage 1 - this week, I will be encouraging students to borrow from the short chapter book section (if they would like to) and will introduce them to Sally Rippin’s series, ‘School of Monsters’, which I hope is not what I will see today!

Stage 2 - are reading the next book in the CBCA New Illustrator section, ‘Naturopolis’ by Deborah Frenkel and Ingrid Bartkowiak which encourages students to look more closely at the interesting nature found in towns and cities. The illustrations are beautiful and for students who enjoy bugs, they’re going to love this one!

Stage 3 - I’m looking forward to reading the first chapter of ‘The Raven’s Song’ by Zana Fraillon and Bren MacDibble and introducing students to the dystopian genre. For a great review of this story, visit this site here.

Kids Book Websites

When deciding what books to purchase for the library, I regularly visit a few websites and Facebook pages that families may like to use also. My first point of call is ‘Children’s Books Daily’ from Teacher Librarian Megan Daley. Daley has some excellent lists of ‘must reads’ for all ages and has links to her podcast ‘You Kids Next Read’ with Alison Tait (a children’s author). They also have a really good Facebook page that’s open to everyone.

I also like to use the ‘Kid’s Book Review’ website which reviews a great range of books for all ages and also has interviews with Australian authors and illustrators. One other website I visit is ‘The Children’s Bookshop’ by Paul McDonald, who is a renowned presenter of children’s literature. He has an excellent monthly ‘Book Trail’ page where he introduces some of the best new books that have been released.

SORA Books of the Week

This week, SORA (the school’s digital library) recommendations are about the number one borrowed non-fiction topic in the library - Minecraft! SORA has provided a QR shortcut to a Minecraft graphic novel for primary students and two books for secondary. One of these is ‘Minecraft for Dummies’ which is probably where I need to start so I know what the kids are talking about!

To log into SORA, follow these instructions. Your child will need their school username and password which is available from their classroom teacher.

Quick Bits

  • Thank you to the families who were able to support this term’s Book Club. The school really appreciates it and I was able to use the credit we receive from these orders to purchase new books for students to enjoy.
  • Coming up next week - Refugee Week. There are always great books to read about this topic.
  • The end of term is closing in, so if you could please help your child return any overdue books, would be really appreciated.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

We have more super readers who have finished their reading challenge; congratulations!

Well done, Athena!

Meet the Reader

Meet Claude, who found a book with his name on it. It’s a big name too and maybe sent him a little crazy!

4P is hard at work learning about the Dewey Decimal System.

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
