College Concert Band
Last Sunday, our boys from the Senior Concert Band took part in the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival, held at the Kambala School in Rose Bay. The boys played in the Graham Lloyd Event – Secondary School Concert Bands, a category with four other bands in it, and some stiff competition, such as Scots College, Abbotsleigh, and Newtown High School of the Performing arts – some of which had almost double the number of players than us!
Our boys played brilliantly, with accuracy and energy, and received a bronze award for their efforts. They rose to the occasion and did the College proud.
Next month will see the College Orchestra get their opportunity to participate in the Festival, taking place at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Strathfield Rotary Youth Achievement Awards
The College was recently informed of three of our students who were selected to receive the Strathfield Rotary Youth Achievement Awards in the Junior Male Sport category. I take this opportunity to congratulate Samuel Avvenevole, Mitchell Woods, and Dante Barbanera on their outstanding achievements. It would be remiss of me not to make mention of Samuel who was awarded the Roy Ellis Shield for being recognised as the Young Sportsperson of the Year. Below you will find copies of the citations that were read out at the presentation evening held at the Homebush West Community Centre:
Samuel’s achievements - I am delighted to endorse the nomination of Samuel Avvenevole for the Strathfield Rotary Junior Sports Award.
I have been the Manager in Charge of Baseball and Softball at St Patrick’s College Strathfield for eight years and saw the potential in Samuel from a young age. After his selection in our U14s team, he has gone from strength to strength, enthusiastic about playing with his teammates and improving his skills. After discovering that there was a Winter season to follow his successful Summer season, Sam’s dedication to skill development, game knowledge and teamwork has shot him straight into the stratosphere!
He has been a good role model to younger, less experienced players, building them up and sharing his knowledge freely with them at training and leading by example during games. Samuel can play in any position the coach needs him to play and he does it with zest and determination.
The 2022/23 season saw Samuel help lead the College’s First IX Baseball team to premiership glory in the RHBL competition. He then went on to be selected by the association in their All-Stars U16 team that contested both the State and then the National Championships. The team’s outstanding success has led them to taking part in the World Series Championships to be held in South Carolina in July of this year. Samuel’s all-round ability makes him a vital member of this team.
Samuel is a very hard worker and pursues his academic success with equal focus. He is respectful and ready to share his enjoyment and success with others, genuinely happy for all in the team.

Dante’s Achievements - It is with pleasure that I endorse the nomination of Dante Barbanera for the Strathfield Rotary Junior Sports Award. I have always found Dante to be a polite, focused, and hard-working young man. Dante is always willing to be involved in the Co-curricular life of the College, playing Rugby Union and supporting his House during school carnivals.
Dante has achieved at a very high level in his chosen sport of Jiu Jitsu. He has won many State and National Championships and a Pan Pacific Championship for his age. In the middle of 2022, Dante traveled to Abu Dhabi to compete in the Youth World Championships. Unfortunately, Dante came up against the defending champion and lost in a close fight by only one point. His opponent then went on to win the title once more. An amazing achievement!
One thing that impresses me greatly about Dante is that through all these achievements he is able to stay humble. He is not one to boast or brag about his achievements. Rather, supports his friends in their endeavors and allows others to take the spotlight. I believe that Dante is an excellent role model in this regard and is worthy of his nomination for the Junior Sports Award. I wish him all the best for this nomination.
Dante’s biggest and most prestigious wins in Brazilian Ji Jitsu are:
- Pan Pacific Jiu Jitsu IBJJF Championship 2022 - Melbourne State Sports Centre - Gold GI
- Australian Jiu Jitsu Championship Melbourne State Sports Centre 2022 - Gold GI
- NSW Jiu Jitsu Championship 2023 - Gold GI
- ACT AFBJJ Championship June 2022 - Gold GI

Mitchell’s achievements - Mitchell is an outstanding young man that excels in a number of areas. He has represented NSW in Rugby Union, Rugby League, Australian Rules Football and Touch Football. Mitchell has been a member of the Canterbury Bulldogs Rugby League Academy, the Sydney Swans Academy and the NSW Waratahs Academy while continuing his studies at St Patrick’s College Strathfield for a number of years. He continues to strive for excellence in all areas and is a humble student/athlete. He assists the Prep A Junior School team on a Wednesday afternoon with their training, being a mentor to the students in the years below. He has been a member of the St Patrick’s College First XV since he was 14 years of age in Year 9 and leads the team through his actions on and off the field.
In the past 12 months, Mitch has captained his country in the Australian Under 16s Australian Rules Football team; was named Best Player for the NSW Waratahs in the Under 16s National Championship that took place towards the end of 2022 and was awarded Best and Fairest in his Harold Matthew’s Grand Final win with the Canterbury Bulldogs earlier in the year. He shows exemplary commitment to all sports and is unassuming in his demeanour when approached about his sporting achievements. Mitchell is a worthy recipient for this award.
Supporters’ Duty
A reminder that Years 5 and 11 have been designated Supporters’ Duty on Saturday 22 July. All boys are to report to the Powell Pavilion between 1:00 PM and 1:15 PM dressed in correct College sporting attire or Winter College uniform and have their names marked off. Once this has been completed, boys will move to SPC No. 3 to support the College First XI and await further instructions. Boys will be dismissed from Breen Oval at the conclusion of the First XV game; approximate time is 4:50 PM.
Boys who are representing St Patrick’s in College fixtures played later in the day are to seek out their Year Coordinator upon arrival. These students will inform their Year Coordinator of what team they played in, the location of the fixture and the start time.
