Surviving the holidays

The holiday period can be challenging for all involved. It can be even trickier when families need to navigate and juggle a change of school routine, occupying their son/s and finding appropriate levels of motivation and engagement for returning to school. Below are some tips that may be useful during the upcoming three-week holiday break:

  1. Sit down with your son/s and plan activities that they can look forward to. Make a list of free activities, activities they can do at home, and activities with friends/other families.

  2. Set appropriate rules for computer, device use and TV. It’s important that he has a balance of indoor and outdoor activities. Set a time limit and enforce those daily.

  3. Be assertive about when your son can use their devices/phone/tablet, where they use it and how. Ask him to have a “bedroom free” device rule especially at night before sleep.

  4. If your son is going to the movies or socialising with friends at parks etc, ensure they agree to your set times for arrival back home. It’s important they uphold routines and timings, the same as the expectation is when they are at school; turning up on time to school, to class and to scheduled training sessions/game/ extracurricular activities.

It's an important time for them to continue connecting and building those relationships with you. They’ll be tired from the busy term that was and will require your support and patience at times. Nonetheless, I thank you for your support as we look to continue fostering positive and healthy minds here at the College. I wish you all a restful and enjoyable break with your son/s.
