Year One

Hello, Year One Families,

The Year Ones have been very busy learning new concepts and continuing to be risk-takers in the classroom. Specialist classes have now been swapped, please keep an eye out on class SchoolBox pages for updated timetables.

Reading

In Reading, we have been learning about text-to-text connections. Students have been using their prior knowledge of texts to make these connections. Students have been looking at how texts can be similar or different when creating their text-to-text connections. We have also been focusing on sequencing stories to develop students’ comprehension of a text. Students have been using their knowledge of sequencing to put texts back in the correct order and have been having a lot of fun doing so!

Writing

Students have started to learn about procedural texts, which tell us the steps of how to do, or make something, in the correct order. We started the week by washing our hands correctly and discussing all the correct steps needed. Students were then able to write a procedural text on ‘how to wash your hands’. While creating our procedures, we discussed using action verbs. We then got to learn how to make a paper plane and write a procedural text with the correct steps. Students did a fantastic job with this!

Numeracy

In Mathematics, we have started a new concept ‘Location’. Students were learning how to follow and give simple directions. Students were able to locate different items, by describing where the item was located using positional language. We have also started exploring the concept, ‘Subtraction’, and have been using ‘part-part-whole’, where students explore hands-on materials to solve simple subtraction problems.

Inquiry

Students participated in their provocation for our new Unit of Inquiry starting. Unit of Inquiry 3 is our ‘Farm to Plate’ unit, under the transdisciplinary theme ‘How we Organise Ourselves’. Students were exploring different food resources, and where they come from. We will be going on an excursion to Animal Land to explore this unit of inquiry, students are very excited!
