Year Eight

Mathematics

The Year Eight students have enjoyed their unit on Statistics and the post test results are encouraging.

The focus for this term has been Geometry. Students studied measurement and converted between different units of measurements. Lessons were differentiated with hands on lessons, video lessons and explicit teaching. In class, students discussed the relevance and importance of measurement and many students went home to measure their rooms and household items. The purpose was to identify the unit of measurement used to measure different items.

Students then experimented with calculating the perimeter and area of different geometric shapes. They then generated formulae to calculate perimeter of squares and rectangles. Some students were extended to find the perimeter of irregular shapes.

In area, students created formulae to calculate area of geometric shapes. They studied squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, rhombus and kites. They realised that there is a direct relationship between the different geometric shapes and composite shapes when calculating area. To extend their learning some students found the area of composite shapes. They were able to apply their knowledge of the different formula to calculate the area of different shapes.

Students then went on to investigate volume and capacity.

Wood Technology

Term Two has seen Year Eight Wood Technology students complete their first project of the Resin Art Serving board. Students completed their boards by learning to apply epoxy resin to and oiling the surface of the timber to protect and seal their project. Applying resin can take many years to master, however the Year Eight's displayed their capabilities to problem solve, think creatively and exhibited tremendous enthusiasm by completing some outstanding pieces of resin art to their boards.

In the coming weeks, students are beginning the process of constructing their next project of the Wireless Charging Side Table. Year Eight's will revisit the stages of the design cycle to determine the background information required to create their table and begin the construction process.

Spanish

In the last few weeks Year Eight Students have dived into Unit 2: La Vida Sana. In this Unit, we will be learning about the parts of the body in Spanish, as well as how to express our feelings and talk about illnesses and injuries.

Our first Education Perfect Competition of this term has come to a close and two students achieved a Bronze award, and one student even achieved a Silver award!

I would like to encourage students to get involved in the new Competition which will be running throughout the rest of this term. As we learn more throughout this unit, more vocabulary and content will be added to the competition. It's a great way for students to revise prior knowledge, consolidate new knowledge, and engage with Spanish in a different way.

Humanities

Welcome to our Term Two newsletter for Year Eight students. This term, our Humanities classes will be exploring the theme of revolution. Students will investigate different revolutions from around the world and learn about the power of protest for change. Our Civics & Citizenship statement of inquiry is "Australian citizens have the responsibility and freedom to advocate for change in the society that they live in."

As part of this unit, students will act by demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of change. They will choose to produce either a persuasive response, information report, or a news segment to communicate their findings.

We hope that your child has a successful and fulfilling term. Thank you for your continued support of our school.
