Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

Thank you to all families who came along to our Three-way Conferences to support the students. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to share their learning and be proud of what they have achieved so far this year. We hope that Mother's Day celebrations were wonderful for all the mums in the Saltwater community.

Reading

In Reading, the students have been practising their skills in analysing an author. They have investigated the elements of writing an author may have, such as humour or different types of descriptive language. The students have also analysed different characters by learning about their traits, motivations and actions. The students then created a short magazine about Anh Do and his books where the students summarised his books and write them a review.

Writing

In Writing, the students have been using the skills they have learnt about memoir writing to create a memoirs about their favourite memory. Students followed The Writing Process and created a plan before they could develop their draft. Afterwards, students used the VCOP method of editing, which they have been practising throughout the term, to uplift their work and create a more sophisticated writing piece.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the students have been working in fluid groups to enhance their skills relating to location and transformation. This included learning about directional language, maps, cartesian planes, how an object moves, and different forms of symmetry. In these groups, students have been able to focus on learning that is at their level, enabling all students to get the support they need. This was the last week on this topic before moving on to our next Unit of Inquiry, which will focus on data representation and interpretation.

Inquiry

In inquiry, we concluded our investigation into a famous Australian migrant. Students were given the opportunity to present their famous Australian migrant to the class and share what they have learnt about migration. This allowed students to work on their communication skills, in particular their ability to both speak and listen in a formal setting.
