Year Four

Dear Year Four families,

We trust that you are keeping well.  We sincerely appreciate everyone's involvement in the three-way conferences. It was excellent to see the students display their diligent efforts during the semester.  We strongly believe that having conversations around students' learning strengthens our partnership with families and enables us to tailor our teaching and learning for our wonderful students.  We also hope that Mother's Day celebrations were memorable for all the wonderful mums in the Saltwater community.

Inquiry

This week the Year Fours have been exploring their new  Unit of Inquiry Three  under the Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea: Media is a powerful tool that can influence thinking about healthy messages.

We are noticing that students are really enjoying this unit and have begun to formulate questions of interest while making connections to their own health and health-related media messages.

Athletics Carnival

Term Two Week Three was an exciting week with the Year Three and Four Athletics Carnival on Monday at the VU Athletic tracks. Students participated in a range of athletic events, supporting each other’s efforts and gaining points towards their Houses. Luckily the weather was on our side allowing students to enjoy the event. It was really pleasing to see = parents showing their support to the children. Congratulations to all the amazing students for all the extraordinary effort and showing great team spirit.

Writing

We have unpacked the new writing unit this week. In this writing unit, students have begun to inquire about information text. As a tuning in activity, students consolidated their understanding of facts and opinions. They learned that a fact is a statement that can be proven to be true by the use of evidence.

Students are learning that opinions, unlike facts, are neither true nor false. People's opinion can  be expressed as a belief, attitude, value, judgment, or feeling.

Reading

Year Four students have started inquiring about non-fiction texts. Students are exploring non-fiction text features  through the various activities designed. As they delve deeper into this reading unit,  students are beginning  to locate non-fiction text features in texts that they are reading in class. They are also engaging in deeper conversation while making connection to the central idea of this unit. Students are showing great interest while finding out that there are a variety of non-fiction texts that they can locate in the library and on Epic. We are extremely  proud of all our Super Readers in Year 4!

Mathematics

Students are investigating data representation in Mathematics. They have been surveying their peers and making their own graphs to get data. It has been wonderful to watch the students connect their graphs to their goals. Some students focused on producing line graphs, pie graphs, and column graphs!

Kind regards,

Year Four Team
