Year Three

Dear Year Three families,

We have had a busy few weeks in Year Three. Our Student Led Conferences were a great success and it was wonderful to see students taking pride in their work and presenting it to their families. Celebrating the success and hard work of our students could not have been done without all the families, we would like to thank all families for your continued support.

Athletics Day

Week Three began with the Year Three and Four Athletics Carnival. It was great to see students being risk-takers, participating in a range of different activities and cheering each other on. All the teachers were very impressed by the effort and support students provided each other with. Students were enthusiastic about scoring points for their house colours. In the end, Goolagong house scored the highest points on the day. Well done!

Reading

In Reading, we have been focusing on the reading strategy of summarising. Over the past few weeks, students have been learning about ways in which they can create summaries for fiction texts. We have covered the '5-Finger Retell' and 'Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then' strategies. Students have now enhanced their understanding by verbally presenting their summary to a partner. It has been great to see students developing their confidence in summarising and working collaboratively with others to present their work.

Writing

In Writing, we have been exploring different forms of poetry in our writing lessons. The Year Three cohort have covered Haiku, Limerick and Cinquain poems. Teachers have been impressed with the way students have been using the writing process to plan their ideas in their Writer's Notebook and then draft, edit, revise and publish their work.

Maths

We have completed our unit on addition and subtraction and moved on to our new unit based on Time under Measurement and Geometry. Students have been focusing on telling time using 5-minute intervals and using their knowledge to demonstrate time in various ways. It has been great to see students using their prior knowledge of time concepts and further developing those within this unit. Students have demonstrated that they are great communicators by sharing and discussing their answers and strategies with each other.

Inquiry

We continue to unpack our first line of Inquiry,   'how does technology work?' based on the Central Idea, 'Technological advancements have revolutionised our interaction with the world'. Students have worked collaboratively to research and identify what technology means and how it can be categorised. They continue to build their understanding of how technology impacts us in our daily lives and how it has evolved over time. It is great to hear that students are having conversations with their families to further their understanding and investigate their wonderings.
