Year Two

Dear Year 2 Families,

Greetings to you all. We were delighted to see those of you who were able to attend out three-way conferences to allow your children to showcase, and us to celebrate your children's achievements thus far in 2023.

For us as teachers, it always a pleasure to see the looks of pride on your faces when you see and hear about the progress they are making. Thank you so much for taking such an active interest in, and supporting their progress in cooperation with our teaching team.

Reading

During the past few weeks Reading lessons, the students have been focusing on developing their awareness of non-fiction texts. They have analysed those texts and how the text features assist them to efficiently seek out and gather information for research purposes.

They have also been exploring how to make and record connections to text and exploring how text to self, text to text and text to world connections support them in making meaning from the texts they engage with.

Writing

In writing, the students have been analysing and practising how to use various features and organisational structural elements of non-fictions texts. In doing so they have been considering how their use contributes to their enhanced ability to communicate effectively with their audience through their writing.

They have also explored how sentence and world level elements such as punctuation signs, and control of verb tenses enhances their written communication.

Numeracy

In their mathematics classes, the students have been how to use various strategies to enhance their fluency in solving problems requiring addition and subtraction. The strategies they have been exploring include using doubles fact knowledge, near doubles, bridging to ten, part-part-whole and whole-part-part.

Inquiry

In Inquiry the students have continued gathering and categorising their research in response to their inquiry questions into natural disasters. They have explored how to use their questions as paragraph headings, and summarise their learning in paragraph form in information reports. They have experimented with alternative reporting methods, like producing posters, and editing and publishing practices.

Swimming

Grade Two participated in their annual swimming program, hosted by Saltwater Swim Schools, over weeks 2 and 3 of term. The students participated with enthusiasm, and further developed their swimming, as well as their self-organisational skills through the experience.

Reminders

Please ensure that the students bring the following to school daily

  • Fully charged iPads
  • Full and fresh drink bottles
  • Appropriate clothing and equipment for protection from the weather conditions

We look forward to your children making a strong finish to Unit of Inquiry Two, and applying what they have learned across the curriculum in this context.

Kind Regards,

The Year Two Teaching Team
