Year 8 Technology - Make it or Break it

In Technology year 8 have been busy finishing off the creation of a product that addresses a need they have identified.   For this unit they had to create their own driving question by filling in the blanks as shown below:

“How can I create a beautiful ________ so that _________?”

Their teachers Mrs Burns and Mrs Portelli would have loved to invite the St. Luke’s community to view their work.  However due to restrictions on social distancing this was not possible so they have created a virtual exhibition.  Each student’s driving question and work is shown with updates occurring regularly as products are completed.  Please click on the image below to access the exhibit and then press play.  If you are viewing the exhibit on a smartphone or tablet you will need to download the free app from the App Store or Google Play.

Experiments and Writing in Stage 4 Science

The students in stage 4 Science continue to develop their understanding of how to conduct science experiments safely and with accuracy. The students recently investigated the electrical conductivity of plastic, iron, magnesium and copper in order to determine the properties of metals and non-metals. Our stage 4 science teachers provided the students with a scientific report, however, the students were required to collaborate on how to use the science equipment to assist in conducting the experiment effectively. All students then engaged in a purposeful writing task in which they were required to analyse their recorded data in order to draw conclusions. Students composed a written justification on the classification of one metallic and one non metallic substance. In stage 4 science, students have been using their teachers’ written examples to assist them to develop their writing skills.

Stage 3 Visual Arts and English- Visit from an illustrator

In English and Geography, students are learning about stereotypes and the influence of those in the way we see and think of other people. In English, students have been writing narratives from different perspectives and experimenting with how perspectives can be transmitted. The aim of this learning is to “blow the lid” on stereotypes and raise awareness of how damaging these can be. This has been integrated into Visual Arts, in which students are starting the process of storyboard their own story to blow the lid on an Australian stereotype. This process started last week when an illustrator came into Stage 3 to share with us her expertise and teach us how to create an effective storyboard. Students learnt how to organise their ideas and tell their story through pictures. We thank our principal Mr Miller and Felicity Gardner, the illustrator, for this wonderful learning opportunity.

Stage 3 Mathematics Mass

For the last few weeks in Mathematics students have been learning about mass. They are focusing on problem solving skills through their learning. Students explored the gross and net mass of different everyday objects. Students also explored the mass of different objects using scales. We used Newman's prompts to help them think about ways they could solve the problem. Below is a picture of the prompts that students can use when solving problems.
