Discovery Centre

Curriculum

Selamat siang families! We have had another fantastic week in the Discovery Centre this week. The Foundation students were excited to take home their first 'take home books' and the Foundation teachers have loved hearing about who they read with at home. We have given students readers to take home during their time away from school. We encourage you to practise reading these books together and ask questions about the book to check for their understanding.

In Literacy, we met the letter C and brainstormed a big list of words that start with the ‘c’ sound! Our c-c-caterpillars were tricky to make but it was wonderful to see Foundation students practise their perseverance and not give up! A focus in reading has been to share our favourite part of the story with a friend.

In Mathematics, we played some new games to help practise counting and comparing numbers. The Foundation students played with a partner and aimed to have the biggest number when they rolled their dice or flipped over their domino!

We have enjoyed learning a little bit about Chinese New Year and the Lunar Zodiac, and we can’t wait to learn about other cultural celebrations together this year!

These are some of the other super fun things we did this week!!

Given the move to Stage 4 Lockdown, we will be conducting our Parent Teacher Interviews via phone calls. Your scheduled appointment time will not change so you can expect a phone call from your child’s teacher on the day and time you booked. Please note that these phone calls are 10 minutes and are planned to get to know you and your child to best support them at school.

Student Voice

This week, Foundation students came up with some of their own learning goals:

Elliot - "I'm think I am going to practise reading"

Nethun - "I will do lots of counting"

Ivana - "I will practise learning about ABC's"

Reminders

  • Our parent teacher interviews will now be a 10 minute phone call. You will be called on the day and time that you booked in via Sentral.
  • Your child’s teacher will call using a private number.
  • Orange folder is to be packed and brought to school each day. Inside should be students’ take home book to return (from the previous day) and their reading journal to be checked off by their teacher.
  • We sent home Magic 100 Words booklets to practise the 100 most common words at school. We suggest starting with Golden words and moving through the booklet once Golden words are mastered.
