Leadership Centre

Curriculum
Halo semuanya!
We had a very eventful start to the week in the Leadership Centre last week, with students in the Senior School participating in our annual Swimming Carnival at Aquarena in Doncaster. It was great to see all students involve themselves in a range of events and supporting their peers. The Swimming Carnival is always a highlight of the year and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Brisbane for all her efforts in planning the event, as well as all the parents who assisted on the day. Because of their hard work and dedication, we were able to have yet another successful Swimming Carnival! Congratulations to the following swimmers from the Leadership Centre who have qualified for Division Swimming: Lavinia, Claire, Isaac, Melrain, Emma H, Justine, Jonathan, Brandon, Josiah, Emma O, Sophie, Witcha, Talya, Vanessa, Cooper, Jacob, Miles, Zoe and Ryan.
Last week, students looked at Step 1 of the Seven Steps to Writing Success process, which focused on the importance of creating detailed plans before commencing writing. Students have been exposed to a range of planning templates to help them organise their ideas prior to beginning their narratives. In addition to this, students have worked both independently and collaboratively to practise using a range of planning proformas. It was great to see students brainstorm a range of narrative elements, such as a hero, villain, setting and problem, in teams, bouncing ideas off each other and discussing which elements worked and didn’t work within their story plan. In the next coming weeks, students will be looking into how they can develop tension in their writing to engage the reader, as well as ending narratives with impact.
In Reading, students have worked hard to develop their understanding of each of the roles in our upcoming Literature Circles. Last week, students had the opportunity to practice the role of Discussion Director and Literary Luminary. The role of Discussion Director includes developing a list of questions that the group can answer and discuss about certain events within a text. They encourage people to talk over the big ideas of the text and share their reactions. The role of Literary Luminary is to highlight special sections or quotes in the text for the group to discuss. The idea is to encourage others to go back to some especially interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling, or important sections of the reading and to think about them more carefully. We are looking forward to students showcasing their understanding of each of the roles in Literature Circles.
In Mathematics, students continue to build their knowledge of place value and have been supported in using a range of strategies that can be used to assist them in solving a range of complex problems. Students have explored many ways in which numbers, both whole and decimal, can be recorded and continue to discover the meaning of some relevant keywords, including additive and multiplicative extended notation and index/power. As always, students are encouraged to record their mathematical thinking and are guided, through questioning, to explain the steps they take to solve a problem, so as to further develop their number sense.
Terima kasih,
The Leadership Centre Team

Pupil of the Week
5/6B: Dheer M -
For demonstrating the character strengths of perseverance and love of learning when exploring problem solving questions about place value. You trialled a number of different strategies by recording your mathematical thinking and worked well with your peers to solve the problems. Great work, Dheer.
5/6C: Jacob K -
For making valuable contributions as Discussion Director when retelling important events from the text. You provided some excellent examples which helped to create deeper discussion for the class. Amazing work Jacob!
5/6SB: Eddie T -
For being an engaged participant during the school’s swimming carnival. Eddie, you challenged yourself and gave everything a go. Keep up the great effort!
5/6W: Josiah N -
For demonstrating the character strengths of curiosity and love of learning when exploring the law of indices. You applied a range of problem solving strategies whilst completing increasingly challenging problems. Excellent work, Josiah!
