Year 9 Galileo Students temporarily relocated to Carlton Primary School

This term, the Galileo students and staff have made Carlton Primary School their home.

The Year 9 Coleman students have adapted to their new learning environment brilliantly.

“It has been very relaxing; it feels good to be out of mainstream school. I’m enjoying being in a well-resourced and nice space and the consistency of being in the same place each day. Galileo has helped with time management, being organized and has helped with skills outside of school like finding a location using Google Maps”

- Kiana

“It's really nice being in a different environment. The rooms here are great. Being in home groups with people we haven't worked with before is a great opportunity to meet new people and having a playground is the best!”

- Miranda

“The space here is actually really good. It is nice to be able to collaborate with different classes and students”

- Mohamed

The year 9’s have been working hard in research groups on a chosen topic from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students have been required to think critically about issues facing society today and to carefully consider what makes news articles trustworthy.

“I really like the group work because I get the chance to collaborate with other people and connect with others I may not know as well. The research review was quite stressful for how much work we needed to complete under a time constraint however I enjoyed researching a topic I am interested in”

- Olivia

“The research review has expanded my knowledge on the topic that I haven't had the chance to look into before. I am researching sustainable agriculture, and I found out that it is something that affects not only the food side of things, but it also affects climate change.”

- Piyush

Galileo Excursion

The Galileo program encourages students to develop their independence and resilience. This has been especially true for some recent trails. The Galileo cohort travelled to Upper Ferntree Gully to hike the 1000 Steps and have also taken part in a rock-climbing session.

“The trails are enjoyable as I’m getting to spend time with friends in different environments. Rock Climbing was particularly enjoyable as I was challenged because it is not something that I would do regularly”

- Shaurya

“Rock Climbing was definitely a highlight of mine for this term so far”

- Matty

Being based at Carlton Primary School has also allowed for the Galileo team to create stronger connections with the local community, through our community service program.

“Meeting the Carlton Primary School students for community service was great. I was so happy that the student I was paired with was reading Harry Potter because it’s a book I would read anyway!”

- Nell

“Being able to read to the year 3-6’s was an exceptional experience. The children were so eager to read with us making the encounter even more worthwhile. Talking to the kids as an older kid myself made me feel like a teacher which was an unusual and new experience.”
