Fundraising for Eat Up Australia

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

On 23 November, our Year 7 students kept four stationary bikes going for eight hours (from 9.00am to 5.00pm) to raise money for Eat Up Australia.

Eat Up Australia helps provide lunches to disadvantaged school students so they can concentrate better in school and not go through the day hungry.

There was a great atmosphere in the Fitness Room all day long with plenty of healthy House competition and lots of encouraging words to help students stay the course.

So many students offered to do double shifts and some staff jumped on the bikes as well. We are well on our way to reaching our fundraising target.

Christmas gift drive

We are organising two Christmas gift drives for the upcoming festive season. They will both be running from Monday November 29 to Wednesday December 8. Our tote bags are also on Christmas special and make great stocking stuffers.

JUNIOR SCHOOL DONATION

Junior School students are asked to donate a small gift for a child of their age which will be passed on to Igniting Change. Igniting Change is a deliberately tiny charity passionate about sparking big, positive change for people doing it tough in our communities.

Suitable items include such things as books, stationery items, lego, beanie boos and textas. All items need to be new.

SENIOR SCHOOL DONATION

Senior School students are asked to donate an item suitable to put in a Christmas hamper for the Lighthouse Foundation. The Lighthouse Foundation provides homes and therapeutic care programs to children and young people impacted by long-term neglect, abuse and homelessness.

Our focus is to create caring communities where kids can feel safe, form meaningful relationships and begin to heal from traumatic experiences. Suitable items include sweet biscuits, savoury biscuits, jam, chocolate, sweet treats and Christmas bon bons.

TOTE BAGS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

Our beautiful Kilvington designed tote bags are also available at a special Christmas price (just $9.90). For every bag sold over the next two weeks, Kilvington will donate a bag to our Christmas gift drives, plus 100% of proceeds from sales of the bags are donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Eight of our students will also be volunteering on the day.

School TV special report: Respectful language

In today’s world, it is common to hear socially offensive language on the streets, on social media channels, streaming services and in some forms of modern music.

While swearing is becoming more common and less taboo, the use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity.

Although many schools enforce a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to swearing and derogatory language, parents need to also play an important part in enforcing this approach.

This Special Report offers a number of guidelines to help manage a suitable approach when discussing the importance of respectful language.

If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.
