Clyde North Campus News

Whilst the end of term is very busy, and our energy levels might start to wane the King’s public holiday is well placed providing a welcome break. With the conclusion of semester one exams and assessments ending last week, we took the opportunity this week to provide some space for students and teachers to engage in different learning experiences to enhance the development of social and emotional capabilities around wellbeing, safety, and respectful peer relationships.

Year 11 students engaged in two critical seminars focused on safety, first Fit 2 Drive and secondly Safe Partying.

We are all very aware of the road toll, the number of lost and damaged lives appear daily in the news. It is imperative that our young people are provided with multiple opportunities to learn through a variety of mediums. Fit2drive is an interactive program featuring discussions, activities and videos developed by the Fit2Drive Foundation. Students were guided by trained university students as well as Victoria Police and members of Fire Rescue Victoria. The purpose is to educate young people on road rules relevant to the graduated licensing system and to equip them with strategies to stay safe as a road user.  The program provides students with the opportunity to:

practice exactly what they would do and say in risky road situations.

reflect on how to stay safe and ways to get home.

gain an understanding of issues on the roads and road safety directly from Victoria Policeand MFB officers

learn skills to look out for themselves and each other.

be able to take positive action.

Whole New World - Safe Partying Program

This workshop is delivered by Sonya Karras the founder of the Whole New World Safe Partying Program.  Sonya works with a range of organisations including The Victorian Police, The Education Department (presenting to more than 200 schools across Victoria), Youth Groups, Local Council and Child Welfare to name a few. Over the years we have developed a wonderful partnership with Sonya and look forward each year to her engaging, thought provoking and honest presentation to year 11 students on how to be safe when partying. Young people are social, they want to go out with their friends, be it a party or the movies or just hanging out. Whilst our young people think they know it all, we cannot assume that they have all the skills, knowledge, and confidence to act and react in a safe, sensible, legal and parent approved manner. So, we need to teach them, and Sonya does this in a manner that they can relate to.  Sonya provides students with information and strategies to keep themselves safe and make smart decisions whilst partying or hanging out. Sonya uses a mix of humour, sobering stories, and solid strategies, keeping students engaged and laughing while they absorb this critical information.  For more details, please see the link below. https://wholenewworld.com.au/

Year 7 and 8 Wellbeing Day

Year seven and eight students enjoyed a full day of wellbeing seminars focused on building their social, emotional, and physical capabilities. Year seven were guided by the expertise of teachers in unpacking what are safe and respectful friendships, how to spot fake news and the dangers of vaping. Sessions for year eight students included: sexting/social media the laws, the dangers and how to get help.

Both year levels were treated to some well needed physical exercise through a variety of fun activities organised and run the Vocational Major students. Well done VM students, the amount of effort, planning and hard work you put in was impressive.  My thanks to the teachers who played critical roles in the development and running of the Wellbeing Seminars for years seven, eight and eleven.

Last week of term.

Tuesday 20 th June St Peter’s Day.

Our favourite day of the year. Students are permitted to wear free dress, please see the dress code on SPACE (gold coin donation). We will start the day with mass celebrating St Peter. All students are to attend the mass which starts at 9:15am, students must not be late to school. Any student who does not attend the mass will unfortunately not be permitted to join in the other activities throughout the day.  We have three fun rides free of charge running through out the day as well as many House activities including Henna painting, Haunted House, Mario Karts, and lots more.  Each House activity will require a small entrance fee as we aim to raise much needed funds for charity.  A free sausage (or veggie burger) and drink will be provided for all students and staff, but the Tasty Trucks will also be available as usual.

Friday 23 rd June – Last day of term. Please note this is a normal school day finishing at the normal time.

Wishing you all a safe and productive holiday break and remember with gratitude, optimism is sustainable.
