"From the College Archives"

Prior to the Sydney Olympic Games, the Olympic Torch passed St. Peter’s College. One of the torch bearers was student, Lisa MacIntosh who went on to win several gold medals at the Paralympics in Sydney. The St. Peter’s College community gathered on the side of Cranbourne-Frankston Road to cheer on the Olympic Torch and Lisa.  Did you know that there is also a large wooden cross that travels the world prior to World Youth Day in much the same way as the Olympic Torch travels the world prior to the Olympic Games?  The Cross has several names: ‘Holy Year Cross’, ‘Jubilee Cross, ‘Pilgrim Cross’ and 'Young People’s Cross’. This cross has travelled to many parts of the world. It has been behind the Iron Curtain (Prague, 1985). It has been to every World Youth Day since 1992. It has visited Ground Zero in New York and visited five continents. When it is not travelling the world prior to World Youth Day, it resides in the St. Lawrence International Youth Centre in Rome. In 2003, the Pope gave the youth of the world an icon of Mary. Since that time the cross and icon have travelled the world together.  In 2008, the cross and icon visited St. Peter’s College. In keeping with the traditional form of pilgrimage, the cross and icon had journeyed from St. Francis Xavier College, Berwick, accompanied by several St. Peter’s College staff and students. At St. Peter’s College the whole school, plus students from St. Agatha’s Primary School and St. Therese’s Primary School attended an open-air liturgy held on ‘The Avenue’ on the Cranbourne Campus grounds.  At the conclusion of the liturgy, the cross and icon, accompanied by many staff and students, were processed on foot along Cranbourne-Frankston Road to St. Agatha’s Church. At St. Agatha’s the cross and icon were venerated before moving on. The staff and students who were scheduled to attend WYD08 in Sydney were a prominent part of the procession.
