Student Reflections

Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.

Sukhman Sandhu

At the start of term, some student volunteers helped out at the Twilight Tours. Some people helped Ms. Wike with sport, playing badminton. Others helped Ms Ciavarella with a fun science experiment, and another group made lemon cake with Ms O’Hora. Myself and Noor supported Ms. Kennan in our lovely learning community, talking about our subjects and the year 7 experience. It was so much fun being able to get involved, and showcase our school.

Every Monday, Ms. Fletcher has been running Gardening Club. We all have different tasks, from watering the plants, to working with cuttings, to checking the soil.  We have developed a garden outside the Yarra Building, and have been planting vegetables mostly from scraps, as well as propagating fruit.  Thankyou Ms. Fletcher for your support and ideas. Thank you also Ms. Barnes for supporting Gardening Club with supplies to start off.

This term, the Student Voice Team chose to take part in the Push Up Challenge, joined by many other students and staff. The Push Up Challenge is a fun, fit and motivating challenge that students got to participate in to raise awareness for mental health. You aim to do 3,144 push ups in a month, putting the spotlight on the number of suicides in Australia in 2021. Each day you get a different amount of push ups to do starting from the 1st of June till the 23rd June. We ran sessions at recess where we came together as a team to do our exercises. As a school, we raised around $400 for mental health charities. Well done everyone!

All this term, Reclink have been coming to Wollert SC and hosted games for us every Monday. Some of these games have included Dodgeball, Basketball, Kickball, Soccer and Spikeball. It was really great to have Reclink over, and amazing to see our students participate and being active at lunch.

Thank you to Reclink and Baseline for supporting us.

Our school's Tarwin Art and Technology building is now open for our Crochet Club!

After finishing our Food Tech studies, we have started meeting every Wednesday during lunchtime.

Our talented teacher, Ms. O'Hora, has been guiding us through the basics of crochet, including making a slip knot, chain stitch, and double chain. Everyone in the club, myself included, has been enjoying this creative and relaxing activity.

We would love to have more members join us next term and experience the joy of crochet. We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Ms. O'Hora for generously sharing her time and knowledge with us. Remember, the more, the merrier!

Two of our student leaders were fortunate enough to be selected to attend the Whittlesea Youth Summit 2023, which took place on World Environment Day, June 5th. This year's theme was centered around environmental sustainability, and it provided an excellent platform for student leaders like us to engage in inspiring sustainability stories, learn about local solutions, and explore ways in which we can take action at all levels.

The Youth Summit brought together 220 students from 19 different schools in the Whittlesea area, all eager to make a positive impact on the environment.

The day began with a warm Welcome to Country, which was a moment of respect for the traditional custodians of the land.

We were also honoured to receive heartfelt welcomes from Craig Lloyd, CEO, and Administrator Christiaan Zahra AM, from the City of Whittlesea, who extended their greetings to all participating schools.

Throughout the summit, we engaged in several sessions that were designed to empower students and promote sustainability. In the first session, we had the opportunity to interact with a panel of experts, asking thought-provoking questions related to sustainability and gaining valuable insights from their expertise. The second session featured three schools presenting their sustainability projects, while the third session involved a hands-on workshop focused on student leadership development. Here, we learned practical skills in crafting elevator pitches, equipping us with the tools to effectively communicate our sustainability work with confidence. The final session of the day featured a thought-provoking short film titled "Regenerating Australia." This film brought local schools together, inspiring us to collaborate and develop pledges that would encourage a commitment to implementing sustainable practices within our school communities.

Careers Week

In Careers Week students got the chance to participate in a lot of different activities during lunch time. The first event was the trades activity, where we took a glance at what being a tradie is all about, from cleaning a car's headlights, to switching a burnt light bulb to a new one.

On Tuesday, we were able to use VR headsets to get a glimpse of what our future careers might look like. Although there were some technical difficulties and long waiting times, the experience was definitely worth it. The VR technology made us feel like we were floating in the air and able to touch everything, which was both creepy and cool.

Overall, it was a mesmerising experience and helped us gain a better understanding of our career choices.

One of the main events in Careers Week was the fun dress up. We got to dress up as our future careers, with everything from scientists to sports stars!

Soccer and basketball were probably the most popular. It was nice not to wear your school uniform, and it was funny how Ms. Maes kept forgetting and going to tell us off for being out of uniform!

On the same day, we took part in the Amazing Race. We worked in teams of four to find clues all over the school. We had to move as fast as we could to get to the locations, solve the puzzles and make our way to the final destination in the hope of getting a prize. In the end, the winning team was Noor, Deborah, Helen and Maya.

It was really fun, and all the students were really active.

On the Friday of Careers week, Ms. Azzopardi planned a fun trivia session at lunchtime. Many students took part in the quiz, and had a lot of fun along the way. The questions were focused on careers, occupations and skills.
