Twilight Tours
Held in the first week of term, our inaugural Twilight Tours provided an opportunity to showcase our school to the wider community, including prospective Year 7 families. Approximately 80 families joined us for a guided tour of the school facilities, meeting student representatives at key activity points, who shared their experience of Year 7 at Wollert SC. This was followed by a lively Q and A discussion, and light refreshments. We look forward to welcoming our next cohort of Wollertians in 2024, and future opportunities to engage our growing WSC community.
Careers/Education Week
Careers and Education week brought about great excitement around the college. Students were engaged in a number of fun activities, such as the Careers Dress Up Day, Trivia Competition and Amazing Race. Other activities were designed to open students' minds up to career pathways, such as the Trades Workshops and Virtual Reality sessions. Students spoke with excitement about how engaging and inspiring these sessions were, and we look forward to future Careers activities.
Scienceworks Excursion
On the 16th of May students were excited to attend their first excursion to Scienceworks. This day was jam packed with fun and learning. Students were provided with time to explore the museum before viewing the Moonbase ONE show in the Melbourne Planetarium, all of which complemented the Earth and Space Science Curriculum that the students are exploring with their classroom teachers.
Student Reflection
Scienceworks was an interesting and exciting first excursion we got to go on! While we were there, we looked at displays and took part in different physical activities, such as snowboarding and testing how much weight we could pull. After lunch, we went to the planetarium, which was like a theatre, but the seats tipped back so we could watch the projections on a 180 degree, full roof experience. This taught us how space works, and how the seasons work.
Assessment and Reporting
Throughout the term students have been undertaking a number of assessment tasks. The results of their assessments, have allowed students to identify their strengths, areas for growth and measure the progress that they made over a period of time. This assessment has also provided foundation and a direction to teachers as they are writing semester reports and aligning students to a Victorian Curriculum Progression Point. Whilst reading reports, it’s been wonderful to see that overall students are engaged in their learning and making pleasing progress. A huge thank you to all staff for their incredible commitment and effort in completing student reports. Reports will be finalised by the end of the week and will be distributed to parents via Compass on Friday the 23rd of June.
Lunchtime and After School Clubs
We are excited to have a range of lunchtime club opportunities for our students, and look forward to adding more opportunities in Term 3!
Gardening Club has gone from strength to strength, supported by a generous Community Grant. Students have learned about sustainability, planting from seed and scraps.
Based on the recommendation of students, Craft Club was launched in Term 2 with a focus of crochet. Supported by Ms. O’Hora, students are enjoying developing their skills and crochet projects.
Reclink continues to engage students in sporting activities and fun competition. Reclink and Baseline have been a huge support to the school in our foundation year, and we thank them for their ongoing support.
In the last few weeks, Run Club has started as an after school opportunity for our budding athletes. Students are engaging in building stamina and strength.
Youth Leadership Summit
Two of our Student Voice Team attended the Whittlesea Youth Summit, with the focus on Environment and Sustainability. While it was a long and information packed day, our students enjoyed getting to know leaders from other schools and the local area, and came away with some excellent ideas on how to change Wollert Secondary’s relationship with rubbish. This will be implemented through two of our lunchtime clubs, Gardening and Creative Clubs.
Push Up Challenge
The Student Voice Team have been thrilled with the uptake of this term’s major project - the Push Up Challenge. The aim of the challenge is for students to partake in physical exercise every day, with the goal of achieving 3144 push ups (or other exercises) by June 23. The overall intention of the challenge is to raise awareness of the benefits of exercise on mental health, and the atmosphere in our recess Push Up Club has been incredibly supportive and fun!
