1938 Jubilee Celebration
As we celebrate our 135th anniversary, let’s go back to 1938 when Sacré Cœur celebrated its Golden Jubilee. The school enjoyed a fortnight of festivities during November, including concerts, gatherings, luncheons and a garden party. Sunday 6th November was set aside for Alumnae. On this day there was a buffet lunch for around 180 “old children”, afternoon tea with a Jubilee cake bearing 50 candles, and a special play performed by students. The celebrations finished with Benediction in the Chapel.
During the day the President of the Association, Dorothy Niall (Lloyd), “handed to Reverend Mother the Association's gift - a truly royal one - a cheque for eight hundred guineas, to be employed in building the play-rooms and extra accommodation made necessary by the rapidly increasing numbers in the school. A lovely basket of flowers, red, white and golden-the school colours - was presented by Miss Toohey, and the spiritual blossoms were not forgotten, for a little note told Reverend Mother that, besides a generous offering of prayers, Mass was being said every day during the Jubilee celebrations to ensure their success.”
Of course 50 years after the Golden Jubilee, Sacré Cœur celebrated its Centenary in 1988. Here’s to the next 15 years until our 150th anniversary in 2038!

Mater's Chapel in the 1940s
Many thanks to Sandy Curnow for sending in this wonderful picture of Mater's Chapel from the 1940s she found in her box of memories.
The altar is decorated with roses to signify the Feast Day of Mater Admirabilis, which is celebrated on 20 October each year.
