Semester 1 has been filled with every type of Co-Curricular activity you could imagine and the students at Mount Alvernia have snapped up every opportunity in front of them. From the Musical to TheatreSports to RoboCup Junior to Debating and Public Speaking, we’ve seen it all. And 2023 will just keep on giving with many more opportunities coming up in Semester 2.

We are continually impressed by the work of our students and so to celebrate these fabulously dedicated and exceptionally talented students, we took a moment in the last week of school to gather and share in a celebratory pizza lunch – does it get any better?

And we can’t forget to thank all our incredible staff who generously give up their time to share their passions with our students, we couldn’t think of a better team to guide our students. Whether it be teaching them life skills like how to thread a needle in The Tinkers Club or supporting their creative and critical thinking skills like imagining up long-lost items and their regeneration plans in Tournament of Minds. This would not be possible without you. Thank you!

ESU Public Speaking Competition

Over the last two weeks, our Public Speaking Grand Finalists presented their speeches, both prepared and impromptu, at the English Speaking Union Competition. Amaeh Reed (10), Metben Bwogo (8) and Milly Tilson (7) connected to their audience with anecdotes, humour and impressive speaking skills. They were a pleasure to watch and should be congratulated for their time and commitment to this endeavour.

We thank Ms Maria Conway, one of our skilled English and Drama teachers with industry experience, for her support of all our ESU Competitors. We are excited to see how public speaking continues to evolve at Mount Alvernia!

Year 9 QDU Debating Team

What do rebuttals, team cases and our Year 9 Debating Team all have in common? They will all be at the Queensland Debating Union finals coming up next term! Congratulations to this team who have dedicated themselves to weekly trainings, workshops and speech writing. We are very proud of them, good luck!

RoboCup Junior

Last weekend, Mr Alexander Bush accompanied two representatives from our Year 9 RoboCup team, Imogen McKenna and Hannah Crowhurst, to the Regional RoboCup Junior Competition held at Somerville House. The day was filled with lots of problem solving and learning. The girls were able to help out students at other schools who had forgotten parts of their robots – how’s that for organisation?!

Our students performed well and are aspiring to make their robot bigger and better for the next competition. Thank you Mr Bush for your dedication and passion to the team.

Theatresports

Our Theatresports Club celebrated their last Semester 1 club meet today performing their favourite Theatresports games. Congratulations to our team and to all club members on a fun-filled Semester of learning improvisation acting skills. Next term, MS Conway and Mrs Farrow will run a Drama Club, learning skills for performing a scripted play for a young-invited audience.  Any students interested in acting, designing and making costumes, props, technology effects and music are welcome to join this club. Stay posted for this

The Junior Theatresports team thoroughly entertained the assembly last week with a performance of two improvised Theatresports games. The performance demonstrated their teamwork, quick thinking to improvise a situation, creativity and dynamic acting skills. So many students and staff congratulated the team on their captivating performance. Our Theatresports team competed commendably in Term 2 at the interschool Youth Theatresports competition for which they had to compete in four rounds of improvised games for one minute to four minute games.

Students train at Theatresports club weekly to learn the style of game and acting skills but in the competition, do not know the scenario until the MC presents the scene. They then have to apply their teamwork improvisation skills to entertain the audience and are judged by three judges who hold up 10-1 score. It is such an enjoyable experience, developing confidence, having fun and making friends on the learning journey.
