Grade 1

Reading

In Reading, students have been learning the digraphs ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. They have been able to brainstorm known and new words that have these sounds and been able to identify them in the books we read. We will continue to learn new digraphs and transfer our knowledge into our writing.

Writing

In Writing, students have continued their Information report writing. This week we have given the students a choice of topic they would like to explore and write about. The students made groups of three and picked from the following 5 topics: How a Rainbow is made, Sharks, T-Rex. Solar System or Platypus. The students will brainstorm learnt facts, draft the information report then create a poster together in their group. They have done an AMAZING job!!

Maths

During the past fortnight in Maths, students have begun to explore data and collecting information. Within this unit, students learned how data involves collecting information that we can sort and use to understand things in our world. We do this by asking open and closed questions to collect our information. Students demonstrated this in their learning by surveying their classmates by asking different questions to collect data on topics such as their favourite sport and ice-cream flavours. With this information, students were introduced to picture graphs and column graphs which they used to display and analyse their data. Last week, students participated in a data investigation which involved students collecting, representing and analysing data to solve the mystery of Mr. Abdullah’s stolen lolly jar… The Grade 1 students did a fantastic job at completing their investigation and finding the culprit.
