Year 9 Thursday Electives

For those of you who don't know, our Year 9 program runs an 'Elective Day' every Thursday. This means all students in Year 9 select the electives they wish to complete at the start of the year and then spend every Thursday immersed in the subjects of their choice.

The electives include subjects such as 'Street Art', 'Exploring the Outdoors', 'Fitness and Recreation', 'History, Myths and Legends', 'Approaches to Coaching', 'Woodwork' and Farm School.

These elective are designed to allow students to have a strong voice in their school program and have curriculum that adjusts in response to student interest and ability.

It is for this reason that Thursdays have become the favourite day of many of our Year 9s.

In addition to these electives the Thursday elective teams spend a lot of time planning and seeking opportunities to leave school and interact with the Healesville and broader communities.

One great example of this was the two excursions that took place at the end of Term 2. Healesville High School took two separate groups to the city on excursions designed to link to the curriculum within their elective subjects. One group explored the Holden Centre training facilities and how they are used to support elite athletes, while the other group visited the Hellenic Museum and then completed a self-guided street art tour.

The Year 9 Elective Program is a real highlight and a great example of Student Voice in Curriculum.
