Senior School

5/6 JDZ & 5/6 JD

Welcome to Term Three! Can you believe that? By the sounds of the things, the students all enjoyed their break and parents are now happy that they're back at school! :)

We've started the term in an extremely positive fashion. We have been reinforcing high expectations in the classroom and everyone has responded well to this, showing excellent attitudes towards their learning and having small successes in many of the areas being taught!

In line with our new school values, G.R.O.W.T.H (Gratitude, Respect, Outstanding, Wellbeing, Teamwork and Honesty), we have started completing Gratitude Reflections at the end of each day. We believe it is a good time to reflect on something in our day that we learnt, are proud of or made us happy to highlight the fact that there are many positives in our day and we should take a moment to acknowledge these!

NAIDOC WEEK

With NAIDOC Week being celebrated in the second week of the school holidays, our school chose to acknowledge it in our first week back. In classes, we explored what NAIDOC Week is about and how it is important. Students completed Indigenous inspired artwork using leaves and hands. The leaves were used across the school to form the 'Letter A' which will be used in a community project, while the hands were developed for another community art installation.

IN OUR LEARNING

In our learning, we have just started introducing new topics in all areas.

In Reading, we are exploring language concepts. We have been working on identifying the purposes of texts, both visual and written and how these can be conveyed for the reader.

In Writing, our focus has been on persuasive writing. We have been developing effective introductions and arguments using types of evidence and TEEL to ensure the information is relevant and structured appropriately.

In Maths, we have been exploring concepts of time. We have revised how to read analogue clocks and been converting between 12 and 24 hour time.

Our topic for Humanities this term is Geography. So far, we have identified key information from a World Map such as continents, oceans, the equator, tropics and hemispheres. We are beginning to narrow our focus into North America, Asia and Europe, where students will choose specific countries and explore facts and other details about these through a project.

For Science this term, our topic Earth and Space. We are starting with Space and will explore the order, distance and orbit of the planets in our Solar System.

HOMEWORK

After a break in Term 2, Homework is back! This is distributed weekly via Google Classroom. Students should have their login details in their diaries, however if you have any issues with this, please contact one of us.

If you have issues with access to a device or the internet, please let us know and we can provide students with a paper copy.

The expectation is that Homework be completed by 11:59pm on a Wednesday night. (Paper versions can be handed in on Thursday mornings). Homework will most likely be distributed on a Friday afternoon (however this can vary, especially if there are internet outages across Officer!)
