Year 7 History Excursion to the Hellenic Museum
On Wednesday 14 June, Home Groups 7.1 and 7.2 travelled into the Melbourne CBD to visit the Hellenic Museum. This excursion helped to support their current studies of Ancient Greece in History.
The students were guided by museum staff through two interactive workshops: Daily Life in Ancient Greece and Primary Source Analysis using Greek Pottery. They deepened their historical skills and knowledge, while engaging with the collection of artefacts and artworks on display at the museum.
Here are some highlights from the students:
The best part about our visit to the Hellenic Museum was the gallery filled with interesting, valuable objects. Nome Thianhlun (7.2)The best part about the excursion was that the museum teachers demonstrated great enthusiasm when they taught us about the history of Greece. They were knowledgeable and insightful, often responding to difficult questions with interest. Nicole Moses (7.1)
The Hellenic Museum was a great experience! We witnessed many authentic artefacts all of which were explained in thorough, historical detail by the museum guides. The museum was very interactive, we partook in a few hands-on activities such as having the opportunity to write on papyrus scrolls! We were also privileged to handle and closely examine replicas of Greek pottery. Another part of the experience was the tour we received of part of the museum. We witnessed many ancient statues, and one statue that looked so lifelike, it most definitely could've passed for a real person! Overall, it was a memorable and educating experience, a great way to wrap up our History subject this semester! Priscilla Polorotoff (7.2)My favourite thing in the museum is probably learning about the clay, and the best part was seeing all the pictures on vases and learning all about their meaning. Sui Zaa Thang (7.1)
My favourite thing about our visit to the Hellenic Museum was the interesting workshops we took part in as they were very knowledgeable and educational. The workshop about Pottery was my favourite as we learnt how to read intriguing patterns on the pottery art. Mahi Jain (7.1)My favourite thing about our visit to the Hellenic Museum was one specific exhibition that had a realistic silicone figure of a woman associated with the goddess, Iris, with golden wings collecting water at a river. Eden Want (7.2)
What a fantastic way to end to our semester studying the Ancient World in Year 7 History! We look forward to returning to the museum later in the year with Home Groups 7.3 and 7.4. A big thanks to Pastor Matt and Mrs Fevreau for their assistance on the day.
