Senior School

To the surprise, and literal applause of many of our Senior School students, I revealed during a Chapel session in late March that I enjoy playing computer games every now and then. One of my duties as a dad and uncle (who has a little more free time at their disposal during the holidays) is to look after a veritable gaggle of kids every now and then and I have found that a computer game heavy with content is a great way to keep them occupied and engaged. When we select a game, we tend to bite off more than we can chew with a role-playing game that promises hundreds of hours of adventure. I boot up the console, and as a brand new fantasy world first unfolds on screen before us, I am often left to wonder, ‘When are we going to finish all this?’

At the start of the term, I promised that Term 2 will feature a packed calendar, and I can’t help but think that this might be how students may feel when they stare down the long list of school events, classes, and assessments at the start of each term. Teachers often remind students that they are young adults as we impress upon them the many and varied expectations of a Senior School student. Students are expected to work to the best of their ability, apply themselves to their studies, participate in school activities and actively contribute to the rich tapestry that is the Oxley Christian College experience. In doing so, it is easy to forget that these young adults are often at the bleeding edge of their understanding of the world set around them. Though they may be excited by the adventure that lies ahead, without proper guidance, they may only see the trials that also loom ahead wondering, when am I going to finish all of this?

Final Semester for Year 12 Students

Term 3, Semester 2 brings with it the proverbial end game for our Year 12 students. Capping off a 13-year academic career, our most senior students will soon be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned and to apply their developed skills in a final set of assessments and examinations. With the GAT now behind us, Unit 4 assessments and end-of-year exams are quickly coming up. As the pressure builds, it is vital that we remind our students to prepare and to always do their best, but we also must help our students understand that their ATAR will never be the sum of who they are. ATARs are important, but they are only a part of the journey. As their final year of formative schooling comes to a close, it is important that we help our Year 12s to remember everything that led up to their graduation, and not just focus on their final results.

As always, teachers will be on site and on hand to help students revise and prepare, and details of practice exams and revision sessions will be sent out to parents and students in the weeks to come to ensure that each student is able to put their best foot forward before they set off towards the next horizon.

2024 Subject Selections

Our current Year 9 and 10 students are due to make several important decisions in the coming weeks. They will be asked to reflect on their interests, consider their abilities and think about what pathway they would like to take when they leave school. In that, they will be asked to carefully consider their electives for 2024, and our Year 9s will even be asked to contemplate whether they would like to fast track a VCE subject next year.

The upcoming VCE Subject Selection Information Session, scheduled for Tuesday 18 July, will provide parents and students with the opportunity to meet with our VCE teachers, talk about the subjects that are on offer and think about their subject selections for 2024. Mrs Doblin, Mrs Lim and our teachers will provide details regarding the subject selection process, important pathways information and resources will be made available, and teachers will be on hand to help students make an informed decision about their VCE options. If you have not already done so, please check your notifications on the Oxley App and send through your RSVP as soon as possible.

Gifts and Talents on Display

1 Peter 4:10 enjoins us to use whatever gift we have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace, and I believe that this is the message that Oxley instils in each of its students. In addition to Oxley’s strong academic traditions, our students were given multiple opportunities to take the stage and showcase their talents.

The recent Senior School Soiree and Senior School Ensemble evenings put a lot of talent on display as students shared their musical gifts with friends and family. The carefully curated performances showcased the incredible talent and dedication of our students, often leaving the audience in awe. The Soiree evenings offered a delightful blend of solo performances and small ensembles that displayed a wide range of musical genres and styles. Each musician and singer demonstrated exceptional skill and artistry, captivating listeners with their heartfelt expressions and technical prowess. The Ensemble evening was equally impressive with melodies resonating through the LMC auditorium as the choirs and instrumental groups performed. The performances were met with enthusiastic applause, a testament to the hard work and passion of our students and our Music department.

Term 2 Wrap Up

Last, but not least, the Year 9 Civics and Citizenship Election Program wrapped up this week. Our Year 9 students were given the opportunity to investigate the ins and outs of the Australian democratic process. Throughout the program, students took on the challenge of developing and delivering their political campaigns, seeking votes from both staff and fellow students whilst out on the hustings in the Senior School. It was impressive to witness their dedication and passion as they developed comprehensive policies, created compelling media resources, and organised a morning tea to further promote their campaigns. We extend a special mention to the entire Humanities team for their exceptional efforts in coordinating and guiding this program. Their commitment to fostering civic awareness and providing such a hands-on learning experience is truly commendable. The program not only enriched our students’ understanding of politics but also nurtured their leadership skills and encouraged active participation in democratic processes. A full article, including results and photos will be included in the next edition of The Vine.

As Term 2 comes to a close, it’s important for students to take a moment to relax, rejuvenate, and recover. Term 2 might have been busy, but don’t forget that Term 3 holds even more in store. Instead of stressing about the mid-year exams that have come and gone and what’s left to do, focus on the exciting adventure that awaits. Take this time to recharge your energy and approach Term 3 with a positive mindset. Remember, it’s all about looking forward and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead. So, enjoy your break, let go of worries, and get ready for the amazing journey that Term 3 will bring.
