April Careers News

I am looking forward to meeting with all Year 10 students and their parents/guardians where possible over the course of Term 2, to discuss the results of their Morrisby Profile and early future pathway ideas.

This process will form part of their VCE subject selection, and you will start to receive emails with an appointment time soon. Parents or guardians are welcome to attend the appointment in person (if they are double vaccinated), or request to join the meeting online via Teams if this is a more convenient option for you.

Universities are getting very busy with both onsite and online events and I will continue to keep students and families informed as early as possible via Firefly. While Year 12 students in particular are now focusing their attention on course and university/alternative pathway options, the programs listed below are also very worthwhile and highly recommended for students in Years 10 and 11 to assist with their planning and decision making over the coming years.

VCE and Careers Expo: 2022

Melbourne University is offering a range of programs to Year 9 and 10 students in the areas of Engineering and IT. Applications for the Girlpower in Engineering and IT have opened for 2022 and close on April 22nd. Stage 1 of this program is open to girls currently in Year 9 and aims to improve gender parity in the areas of engineering and IT. Focusing on girls who have an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, there are only 40 places in the program and applications can be made here.

Registrations are also now open for the free Hands on Engineering and IT which involves one full day of activities at Melbourne University for Year 10 students on either Wednesday April 20th or Thursday April 21st. No prior knowledge is needed, and students will be given an introduction to different areas of engineering and IT, solve problems, experience the Melbourne University campus and meet like-minded students.

Snapshot:

Swinburne University of Technology

An old institution but a young university, Swinburne is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a university this year. Offering an impressive array of professional degrees, which all include a mandatory 12-month work placement as part of them, Swinburne prepares students exceptionally well for the world of work into which they will graduate. Work placements and internships with industry partners result in many Swinburne students being employed even prior to completing their degrees. A newly developed Bachelor of Applied Innovation can be paired as a double degree with most Swinburne bachelor degrees and involves teaching students skills that will never be replaced by machines including empathy, creativity and critical thinking.

Tours of Swinburne University can be arranged throughout the year here.

Please keep up to date with information on the Future Pathways Firefly page, and particularly the weekly careers newsletter, which is uploaded each Friday.
