Well done!

Anjali S (Year 12)

Congratulations to Anjali Sharma, who has earned a place in the State Finals of the Lions Youth of the Year competition.

Last Saturday Anjali won her third Lions Youth of the Year final, taking out both first place overall and winning of the public speaking section of the competition.

The Lions Youth of the Year award is run each year by Lions international. Starting at a local level, contestants have to submit a written application outlining the achievements and contributions to both their school and wider community and undertake an extended interview where they discuss their community contributions and have their knowledge of current affairs tested. They are then required to present before an audience both a prepared speech on an issue of their choosing and a series of impromptu speeches on unseen topics that must be responded to without any preparation time.

Having won her pervious three rounds of competition, Anjali will represent our eastern Melbourne district in the State Final of the competition, which will be held on Saturday 9 April. Good luck!

In the news

Anjali's court case against the Environment Minister had its appeal heard recently. The initial Federal Court decision was unfortunately overturned, although this is not the end of the road for them.

In case you missed it, there was an excellent interview with Anjali that was on the ABC’s 7.30 Report: https://youtu.be/gx2ztNKbZN4

She also had an op-ed published in The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald.

It’s quite an experience to turn on the news and see a Huntingtower student in an intellectual sparing match with Leigh Sales.

Anjali was also featured on the 7am podcast, interviewed by Ruby Jones

George H (Year 9)

Congratulations to George on his amazing achievements at the 2022 Victorian Age Long Course Swimming Championships (March 10-14). This competition is arguably the biggest of the entire Swimming Victoria calender, with 1233 of Victoria’s best age group swimmers competing (QT needed).

It was a big challenge for George, with over 5 days of competition.

George won 2 Silvers (50 freestyle & 4x50m freestyle relay) and 4 Bronzes (50 backstroke, 200IM, 400IM and 4x50m medley relay). As well as breaking several PB's we are thrilled to hear George will be attending the 2022 Australian Age Swimming Championships held 11th - 18th April, in Adelaide. Well done!

Abby H (Year 12)

Congratulations to Abby who competed in the Victorian Swimming Championships! She competed in and won the state titles for the 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly and the 100m butterfly.

The event was a good preperation meet for when she attends the Australian Open Championships in May. Prior to VIC event, she competed in NSW Open Championship where there were a large number of AUS Dolphins swimming - where Abby was fortunate to reach the finals and be able to compete against them in her main events.

Emilie Hoyne (Class of 2021)

As part of the VCAA’s VCE Season of Excellence, students who receive top marks in their chosen study are invited to audition to present their work to demonstrate the highest calibre achieved during the 2021 examination period. With thousands of students completing the subject, 25 are chosen to present their work.

Emilie Hoyne (Class of 2021) performed this week at the Arts Centre in front of over 800 aspiring students, mesmerising them with her dynamic performance.

A huge congratulations of Emilie, and to Mr. Trent Bockman (Head of Theatre and Productions) for his support and guidance throughout the creative process.
