Year 11 Legal Studies - Neighbourhood Justice Centre Virtual Incursion

On 26th August, 2021, the Year 11 Legal Studies students had the privilege of attending the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (NJC) Virtual Incursion. Although the students weren’t able to have a face-to-face tour of the centre, an abundance of information was provided by guest speakers, Shazia Nishar, Dr. Cameron Wallace and Hieng Lim.

The session started off with the centre's Project Officer, Shazia, giving the students detailed information about the NJC. She explained that the Neighborhood Justice Centre aims to achieve justice through compassionate, tailored and appropriate solutions, and acts in a therapeutic and restorative manner, with as little formality and technicality as possible. It is the only one of its kind in Australia.

The NJC is a venue for the Magistrates Court, the Children’s Court, Victims of Crime and VCAT and they provide case-by-case treatment and support to anyone who comes before their court to address any of the life issues that tend to accompany offending behaviour that live in their jurisdiction.

Dr. Cameron Wallace, the NJC’s Client Services Manager explained to the students the many support services available to offenders such as alcohol and drug treatment, mental health and family violence support services to name a few.  They look at the whole picture.

Another fascinating aspect of the virtual incursion included Hieng Lim, who is the NJC’s Senior Programme Manager. He explained the results of their model and practices, statistics that show what powerful impact the NJC has had on the community by reducing crime by 30% in the City of Yarra and their Strategic Plan and future endeavours to expand their presence.

Overall, the virtual incursion was a fantastic learning experience for the students and was a great opportunity to expand their knowledge in the different avenues of justice systems.
