The Living Science Room

The Living Science program this year started off successfully for the primary section of the school. The students engaged with this program, showing initiative to explore, ask questions, research, investigate, and care for Rocky the bearded dragon, the two goldfish Albert and Edison and the two red factor canaries, Fred and Ginger. Students are continuing to learn about the various habitats, diets and care of these animals. In spite of disruptions to the learning this year, students have shown initiative by sharing information about what they have learnt at home.

Each term the students have participated in learning about either, Australian animals, the human body and various wild animals of the world. We have explored what are living things and non living things and what living things require compared to the features of non-living things. We’ve had a wildlife incursion during semester one, which the students enjoyed very much.

Stories from the Life House.

Bike Riding.

John’s cycling group has been practising road safety. With lockdown keeping our streets and surrounds quiet and calm, Sam, Dom, Hau Jin, Josh Ferguson, and Athan have been exploring the possibilities of our 5km bubble on their bikes.

Cooking and Food Preparation.

Jenny has been working with a student to develop their cutting and food prep skills. The student can cut the fruit and vegetables meticulously, working steadily. Together they have been preparing stir-fries, fried rice, and fruit salad.

Community inclusion.

Curtis, Sam, Bailey A, Corey, and Oliver K. have been getting out and about, delivering flyers for the Edithvale-Aspendale Junior Football Club. Lisa and Cam were with them for support, but they did it all themselves.

Curiosity.

Djordje loves to walk, but this week, in particular, Djordje has been exploring the wetlands around Yarrabah.  With his gumboots on, and Ramon by his side, Djordje has demonstrated tremendous curiosity by stepping carefully in the puddles to assess their depth, and then stepping out again, to compare the depth to the flat grass around them.

Teamwork: Soccer.

Friday’s soccer ‘round robin’ tournament was a feast of teamwork and ball skills! Athan, Lachie, Hau Jin, and Ryan were superb strikers. Nick Bean and Bailey Apo held firm at their respective goals, saving more than one quality shot.  Josh Ferguson was exceptional in all areas, and Bailey C. and Paige worked the centre field with skill. Corey supported everyone with his cheers and kicked a couple of balls back into play. I did my best (that’s me, Lara!), but the students were ably supported by Cam, Ramon, Chris, and a big shout out to Craig!
