HPE Scavenger Hunt

Students in Years 7 and 8 HPE have spent their time in remote learning completing a variety of different physical activities; including dancing, interval training, Strava challenge and online fitness sessions.  When the spring weather arrived, students were encouraged to get outside more by undertaking a class scavenger hunt.  During class students raced each other virtually to find all the items on their lists within their local areas; some students travelled by bike, others walked or ran.  Lauren and Ella (Year 8) collected their evidence by taking selfies of themselves with the items. It was a fun and interactive way for students to keep active during this time.  This activity will be further extended with students developing their own scavenger hunts for other groups to complete.

Well done, Year 7s and 8s!

Guest Speak: Peter Wegner

Peter Wegner is a figurative painter and sculptor based in Melbourne.  Wegner is represented by Australian Galleries and this year was awarded the Archibald Prize for his painting Portrait of Guy Warren at 100.  Peter Wegner came and spoke to 8D about his representation of the human form and the broader themes he explores in his art practice.  Students then took part in a Q & A with the artist, asking questions about portraiture, painting and his artistic influences.

From the call I learnt that if you want to improve your drawings skills you should try and draw lots of things and it can just something random like a drink bottle.

I will apply this to my artwork just by practicing my drawing skills in my free time.

VCE Legal Studies Incursion 2021:

Webex with Victorian Parliament

On 9 September 2021, Unit 4 VCE Legal Studies students participated in an “incursion” – a Webex call from Victorian Parliament.  We learnt about parliamentary committees in general and also performed a role-play in relation to a recent inquiry about medically-supervised injecting centres.  This is a brand-new incursion offered by the Victorian Parliament, South Oakleigh College being one of the first schools to participate in this fabulous learning opportunity!

The Unit 4 (Year 12) students are currently finishing off their final Area of Study about law reform; parliamentary committees being one of the formal mechanisms used to influence law reform in Victoria.  As our host explained, a parliamentary committee is like a “mini parliament within parliament”, comprising representatives of one or both houses of parliament and the various political parties.  Committees review the law in a particular area by consulting with the community, seeking submissions and expert opinions, as well as conducting hearings, which are recorded in Hansard and made public.  Committees are seen to bridge the gap between parliament and the people, to ensure greater representation of the community’s views – on an ongoing basis, not just at election time.

The incursion helped bring to life what can often first appear as not the most exciting of topics and one often rushed through at the end of a very long and detailed Study Design!  The South Oakleigh College “Legal Eagles” will be well-prepared for their final exam in this regard…

In2Science Program

This week marks the return of our In2Science program and connection to RMIT University.

In2Science is a program that connects current university students to secondary school students. The aim of this program is to engage, share and promote Science, Maths and STEM.

Our latest mentor, Jessica Ovens, is studying Space Science at RMIT.

Jessica joined a Year 10 Maths class yesterday via TEAMS and shared her journey with the group.

Jessica unpacked the meltdowns that came with doing VCE online in 2020 and despite the challenges knew that her potential was not limited by it.  By chance, mid-way through last year, she found herself drawn to science documentaries on space and made the decision to find a course that would bring her closer to this endeavour.

Jessica has a natural maths/science bent to her and discussed mathematics as being a series of patterns that she found both interesting and fun to explore.

Jessica is hoping to connect with interested students from SOC that would like to know more about her journey as well as support our students to explore their own.  Jessica brings a positive energy and work ethic to the table that aligns with our school values of high expectations, resilience, respect, responsibility and teamwork.
