Prep

Students celebrated book week by dressing up as their favourite book characters! It was so great to see the effort that was put into each costume. Students celebrated book week with some fun Hungry Caterpillar themed seesaw activities as well as participated in a whole Prep Zoom Lesson with the Hungry Caterpillar himself! The Prep teachers read the students The Hungry Caterpillar story. Students then had a go at drawing the Hungry Caterpillar as they watched a step by step video. It is safe to say there are many awesome artists in prep this year.

Students then participated in Wacky Wednesday. Students dressed up in some wacky costumes, changed their hair colour and even painted their face. Students really enjoyed sharing their Wacky Wednesday looks with their class.

As the AFL finals approach Brookside celebrated the finals with a Final Friday theme. Students dressed up in their favourite teams colours, jerseys, beanies and scarfs! Students have really enjoyed all of our themed days and we have loved celebrating them with you all.

Fun Fridays have been a huge success as students engage in fun activities to finish off their busy learning week. Students have been playing games, dancing, drawing and reading cool stories with their teacher and peers. Fun Fridays have been a great way for our Prep students to stay connected, have some fun and celebrate all of their hard work throughout the week!

Year 1

It is the final weeks of term 3 and we are unfortunately still learning from home, but that doesn’t mean the grade ones have been missing out! In maths, we started our new shapes and fractions unit, and started off by learning all about the different shapes in our world.

For Initialit, we spent lots of time learning about the bossy ‘e’, and how it makes the vowel sound long. All of the grade ones have gotten great at knowing the difference between the long and short vowel sounds.

In writing, we finished up our narrative unit. Some of the stories written were so creative and the Super Sentences had lots of interesting adjectives. We have moved on to information texts now, where we are currently looking at the difference between facts and opinions.

Everyone hopes to be back at school soon, but we are still having lots of fun and the teacher’s are loving spending time with everyone every day on zoom.

Year 2

As remote learning has continued throughout Term 3, the Year 2 teachers have been very pleased with the students’ resilience and the work they are completing on Seesaw. We have all certainly had a busy few weeks! We would also like to thank all parents and guardians for their continued support with their child’s learning. The home-school partnerships have been so important during this time. Families are encouraged to connect to their child’s Seesaw account, as this will allow you to see and engage with the wonderful work that is being done and also the feedback that teachers are providing.

In Literacy we have continued with our InitiaLit program and students have learnt about contractions; prefixes and suffixes; different spelling patterns; and summarising and finding the main idea. We have enjoyed reading a range of texts especially “Pig the Pug” books by Aaron Blabey. Students have also written some wonderful stories using visual prompts.

In Maths, students have shown fantastic growth in their understanding of Multiplication and Division. We have used different strategies for solving problems such as making equal groups, repeated addition and arrays. Students have also been practising skip-counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s.

The Year Two students have also had lots of fun over the past few weeks. We have been celebrating different events such as Book Week, Indigenous Literacy Day, Finals Friday in our favourite sporting colours and of course Fun Fridays have been a big hit recently.

Important Reminders:

This week is National eSMART Week. Students will participate in activities to help them learn about the importance of being safe online. Remote learning obviously increases the amount of time students are working on digital devices, so it is a great opportunity for families to reinforce being safe online at home.

Students are encouraged to wear something yellow on Thursday 9th September to recognise R U OK? Day.

Don’t forget we also have our Bigger, Better, Brighter Book Week incursion on Friday 10th September. You will need to login to Zoom before 9.00am using the details that have been emailed. On this day there will be NO 10.15am Zoom, but the 1.00pm Zoom will go ahead as usual.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

P-2 French

In Prep to Year 2 French we have been learning the song “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in French, which translates to “La tête, les épaules, les genoux et les pieds.” On seesaw we labelled the body parts and also had a go at playing “Simon dit”, Simon says in French. Mrs Kratz made a surprise visit to our class zooms to sing the song and play “Simon dit” in on zoom. We were all very excited to see each other.

We have also learnt how to say “Qu’est  ce quis e passe?”  or “What is happening” and learn some simple verbs in French. The work that is being submitted on seesaw is of a very high standard. Have a look at some of our wonderful work.

Well done to everyone for continuing with their French and having a go at all the activities. You are all super stars.

Performing Arts

In Prep to Year 2 Performing Arts, we have been practising a variety of skills and techniques to improve our diction, projection and vocal expression. These skills will be very important when we perform Eddie the Penguin, so we are using the lockdown to improve these skills. The funniest activity so far has been tongue twisters. Tongue twisters are phrases that are difficult to say because they have many same sounding words. There were many giggles and laughs as we practised and recorded these for our teacher. Inayat from 1A said “This was so much fun!”.

Another enjoyable activity was showing how I am special. Students came up with a huge variety of excellent reasons why they are special. There are also many lovely, special people in our classrooms, school and families and we are very lucky to be spending lots of time with them.
