From the Library

Classroom Reading Trolleys

Over the last month, all Year 7 and 8 classes have come to the library to select books for their classroom reading trolleys.  Recreational  reading in class at regular times assists students  to develop good reading habits and importantly allows them to do this away from the distraction of other media.   Our students have selected a range of interesting fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels to read in class and we look forward to hearing from them about their favorite reads.

Dr Seuss Day

On 2 March 1904, Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born.   Though best known as the children’s author Dr Seuss, his career also saw him work as an illustrator for advertising campaigns and a political cartoonist during the Second World War.

At Fairhills, we celebrated Dr Seuss ‘s birthday in the Library with a colourful display of our favourite Seuss titles.  However, on what would have been Dr Seuss’ 117th birthday, it was announced that six of his books would no longer be published due to their racist caricatures and hurtful content.  Importantly the 6 titles have not been banned however these  books present an opportunity to build awareness and teach young readers about history and the context in which they were written.
