PLEASE JOIN US TO ASSIST YOUR CHILD’S/GRANDCHILD’S LITERACY AND MATHEMATICS LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT.

We are very pleased to be able to facilitate the Classroom Helpers Training Sessions early next term in anticipation of parents being able to join us in classrooms very soon!

At St. James, we value parent/grandparent help in literacy and mathematics sessions and invite you to join us for Classroom Helper Training Sessions.  Attendance at the two sessions is a requirement if you wish to assist in classrooms.

Please note the session dates and times -

Session 1:   Wednesday 21st April  - 9am (repeated at 6pm)

MATHS IN YEAR 3

As you know, each fortnight a Year Level will be sharing their learnings. Check out the wonderful mathematics that has been happening in Year 3.

In Year Three we have been learning about the different strategies we can use to solve subtraction equations and problems. We have been discovering that there are some strategies we prefer to use rather than others. Here are some of the strategies we like to use and a description of how to apply them!

Ben

I like the ‘Counting On Strategy’ because you can use a number line and count on from the lower to the higher number in the subtraction equation and this gives you the answer. This is the difference between the numbers.

Ella

I like using the ‘Split Strategy’. You have to split the number you are subtracting into tens and ones. Next you subtract the tens from the first number.  Then you take the answer to the first equation and subtract the ones from it. This gives you the answer.

Harriet

I like to use the ‘Jump Strategy’ with subtraction. You start at the biggest number and take away the smaller number by first making jumps of ten back along the number line. Then you jump back in ones. This will give you the answer.

As always, if you have any questions please contact your classroom teacher or myself.
