Science at Trinity

We have had a very exciting start to science this year! The students were very keen to get into our new STEM room, put on their lab coats and goggles and have some hands-on experiences!

During the first few weeks we had some great discussions about what a Scientist does. Our junior and middle years students investigated how we can use our senses to help us with our investigations. We completed a ‘Dancing  Raisins' experiment as we used our sense of sight to observe, while also making a hypothesis about what we think might happen!

Our senior students enjoyed participating in a ‘Cats IN the bag’ investigation. This investigation involved the students making informed guesses as to what objects may be in a brown paper bag. The purpose of this investigation was to show the students the importance of writing detailed notes and describing things. We then connected this to the scientific method (asking questions, researching, hypothesising, gathering data/results and forming conclusions).

This week our students started their unit relating to Earth and Space Sciences. The junior school students had some great discussions about Earth’s resources. We learnt that water is a very precious resource. We went on a water walk around the school to investigate how we use water at Trinity. The students took photos and uploaded their findings on Seesaw.

Our middle school students started investigating slow and fast changes. We are looking at how the Earth's surface can change over time. We completed an investigation on erosion and discovered that there are some big erosion problems on our Victorian coastlines. Some students even stating that perhaps a ‘sea change’ in the future wasn’t for them!

Our senior school students are focusing on natural disasters. Each student has chosen a natural disaster to research and we will present our findings using the program ‘Explain Everything’. I’m looking forward to seeing the wonderful work we will complete this term!
