Year 7 Camp Reflections

The Year 7 students embarked on their camp at Mylor Baptist Camp last week. It provided the Year 7s with a great opportunity to get to know each other better, and try a range of fun activities. It is clear from the following student reflections that the giant swing was a stand out favourite!

Before camp, it was compelling and inspirational to hear about what camp would be like from the Year 9 Village Leaders who have already experienced the journey. Camp was exciting, adventurous, upbeat and overall a thrill. All of the Year 7s and I learned many life lessons such as teamwork, leadership and spirit, while having the time of our lives.

Whilst at camp, it was rousing to find out that Mitchell won the Year 7 Endeavour Shield. As I myself am in Mitchell, I found this news especially exhilarating. The Mitchell win, however, was well deserved because every Year 7 in my Village played their part in winning the shield. Also, my favourite activities were the giant swing and the low ropes because in both you had to trust yourself and go out of your comfort zone. The giant swing was exhilarating, lively and extremely different from anything I have experienced prior to trying this breathtaking activity. Low ropes was also one of my most loved activities for it was challenging yet fun. I had to strategically conjure up an idea of how to balance across the many apparatus.  I certainly believe that the Year 7 camp was even more stimulating and fun than I had ever imagined. I believe that camp caused me to become an audacious and intrepid version of myself.

The Year 7s went on camp to Mylor from February 22-24. One of my favorite activities was the giant swing. On the giant swing I was harnessed while the rest of the group pulled on a rope that pulled me upwards. To get released I had to pull a small sphere. Once I had pulled the sphere my stomach dropped and I got thrown backwards. I was swinging in the air for a bit. Once I had stopped, I had to climb down a ladder and then it was my turn to pull someone else.

Some of the best moments on camp were the times when I experienced something for the first time, like the flying fox or challenge course, but what stands out to me the most is the giant swing. You pull a small rope once your group is ready and then drop down into a freefall before the rope catches you. It feels so slow, even for half a second. The ground looks further down than it really is, and you can barely think. It is an exhilarating experience and feels completely different to how it looks from the ground.

My highlights of camp were the flying fox, canoeing and the giant swing. I enjoyed the flying fox because it was high up and it feels like you’re flying. The giant swing is scary but I liked it because you swing from high up in the sky. Canoeing was one of my highlights because its amusing even though my friend and I steered into the blackberry bushes. It was enjoyable, especially with a friend. On the second night we chose two activities to do and I did bouldering and sports. I went halfway around the bouldering room.

On Year 7 camp this year we went to Mylor Baptist camp. It was a lot of fun and we had a great time with all the activities. My favorite activity was the giant swing. On the giant swing, we all worked together to pull up the person on the swing. We would pull them up as high as they felt comfortable, then we would count them down to pull the string. Once they pulled the string they would begin to fall and then, swing. On my turn I went the whole way to the top. It was so scary to pull the string, but it was so much fun. When I got to the top, they did some short pulls to get me as high as possible. I bounced so much that I felt like I was on a trampoline. Then I pulled the string and started to swing. It was so sad when it had to end.
